Brantley Gilbert and Jana Kramer got engaged on Sunday. The couple, both country singers, have been dating for about a year.
Gilbert proposed to his girlfriend, One Tree Hill actress Kramer on his 28th birthday.
The couple released a statement through PEOPLE about their engagement, saying:
“We could not be happier! We are so excited to share this special time with our loved ones and cannot wait to start the rest of our lives together.”
Gilbert made his start in Nashville as a songwriter. He wrote songs for Jason Aldean and Colt Ford, but recently began recording his own music. His song “You Don’t Know Her Like I Do” topped charts last year.
Kramer had a prominent role in One Tree Hill and started her singing career while she was still acting. As a newcomer to the national spotlight, Kramer’s song “Why Ya Wanna” shot to the top of the country charts when it debuted last year.
The New York Daily News notes that Brantley Gilbert was a perfect gentleman when he proposed to Kramer. The star dished, “I was so surprised! He asked my mom for permission before he proposed, which meant a lot to me.”
Both singers have been nominated for their respective Best New Vocalist categories for this year’s Academy of Country Music awards.
Brantley Gilbert proposed to Jana Kramer at the historic Ryman Auditorium Theater in Nashville, which he rented out for the occasion. Along with it being the site of the former Grand Ole Opry stage, it is also the location where Johnny Cash met his wife, June Carter.
