‘Vampire Diaries’ Spinoff Coming To CW

The CW has given the greenlight to a spinoff for The Vampire Diaries, one of its most successful series.

Titled The Originals, the new series will air as a backdoor pilot in the second half of the show’s current fourth season. The new story will focus on the original vampire family and will follow Klaus, currently played by Joseph Morgan.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the episode will follow Klaus as he returns to the French Quarter of New Orleans, which he helped build centuries before, where he is reunited with his former protege, Marcel. Phoebe Tonkin, who plays Hayley on the show, will co-star.

Current Vampire Diaries‘ executive producer Julie Plec will write the episode and become show runner if CW’s orders it as a series.

For Plec, The Originals marks her second project in development at the CW. The Hollywood Reporter reports she is also working on a reboot of Tomorrow People with Arrow co-developer Greg Berlanti. The busy writer also has a feature screenplay, Tiger’s Curse, being set-up at Paramount.

Current Vampire Diaries‘ writers Leslie Morgenstein and Gina Girolamo will work alongside Plec as executive producers on The Originals.

Kevin Williamson, who developed The Vampire Diaries will not be apart of the new show. His plate is currently full running both The Vampire Diaries and new FOX serial killer drama The Following.

While there have been a number of spoilers already released for season four of The Vampire Diaries, the development of The Originals is brand new.
