After years of waiting, Bethesda Softworks and id Software are finally bringing DOOM back to life in 2016. The publisher and developer announced a release date Thursday accompanied by a gruesomely brutal campaign trailer and an equally horrific Collector's Edition for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC shooter. Meanwhile, those that enjoy comedy with their gibs should tune into Conan O'Brien's late night TBS show for a Clueless Gamer segment featuring the game.
DOOM will launch worldwide for all platform on May 13, 2016, according to a Bethesda press release. The first-person shooter is receiving the complete reboot treatment and is going back to its roots as a first-person shooter focused on "badass demons, big effing guns, and moving really, really fast," as The Inquisitr previously covered.
Beta details were not announced for DOOM, but a new one is expected to arrive prior to the game's official release. A relatively small closed beta was recently hosted by id Software.
Those that pre-order the standard edition or the Collector's Edition of the game will also receive the Demon Multiplayer Pack. This comes with a unique demon armor set with three skin variations, six metallic paint colors, and three id logo patterns that can be applied to weapons and armor, plus a set of six Hack Modules. The modules are "one-time consumable items that can give you an edge in a multiplayer match."The DOOM new campaign trailer continues the theme of bloody and brutal gunplay along with merciless melee kills on demons. The space marine is back in action as hell is unleashed into the halls of a Union Aerospace facility on Mars. The marine is then unleashed upon hell for more blood and guts action until he meets a painful end at the hands of a Hell Knight.
Expect to see more gore tonight when DOOM makes its debut on Conan during a Clueless Gamer segment. The late night host will be joined by Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller, Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman, and Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch.
A preview of the segment was posted on YouTube earlier today with Miller providing some memorable lines. The NFL sack star was asked how he knew a person in the game was a hologram. He responded, "I seen 2pac at Coachella."DOOM fans should also expect the arena style multiplayer the game kicked off to also return when it launches in May. Domination, freeze tag, and clan arena are base modes confirmed for the game so far. However, the shooter is embracing the modding community with Doom Snapmap.
Doom Snapmap is a modding tool built into the game that allows players to quickly and easily build their own maps. It also provides the ability to create all new gameplay modes by going in and creating or edit game logic. Additionally, the new content created can be shared across the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
This is similar to how Fallout 4 mods will be shared between each platform, which will be done through the Bethesda.net website. The publisher hasn't shared any additional details yet other than to say they plan to reveal more in 2016.
