‘Muppets 2’ Replaces Jason Segel With Ricky Gervais

When The Muppets film hit the box office and was hailed as a box office sucess, insiders thought its star and writer Jason Segel would continue the next chapter, the inevitable sequel. However, Segel was adamaent early on that the muppets would have to live on without him — at least for the time being.

Now it’s being reported by Screencrush that funnyman Ricky Gervais will helm the sequel to The Muppets. In addition to Gervais, Modern Family’s Ty Burell is also going to make an appearance, in what’s expected to be a star-studded film like its predecessor.

Little by little details started coming out about the sequel. In November, Collider reported that Bret McKenzie was coming back to compose new songs for The Muppets sequel, which wasn’t a surprise seeing as the original songs were nominated and won during last year’s Academy Awards.

In addition, it’s said that Christoph Waltz is set to play an Interpol agent, and the film will be set in Europe with a usual caper plot. Although the cast is expected to be a genius comedic ensemble, it’s said that Segel may or may not make a cameo.

Production for The Muppets 2 is said to start in January, with a script by Segel’s writing partner Nicholas Stoller, and James Bobin. Bobin’s was also the director on the first film, so as far as tone goes the muppets should be in good hands.
