2043 Census Prediction: Non-Hispanic Whites Will No Longer Make Up Majority Of Population
According to a 2043 census prediction from the United States Census Bureau, non-Hispanic white Americans will cease to make up the majority of the population in about two decades.
The Census Bureau released its populations projections today and predicts that white Americans will no longer be the majority in 2043. According to the Bureau, two major factors played into their 2043 census prediction. In the next 48 years, the Hispanic population is expected to grow by 75 million people. The white, non-Hispanic population, however, is expected to shrink. By 2060, there are expected to be 20 million fewer non-Hispanic white Americans.
“The non-Hispanic white population is projected to peak in 2024, at 199.6 million, up from 197.8 million in 2012. Unlike other race or ethnic groups, however, its population is projected to slowly decrease, falling by nearly 20.6 million from 2024 to 2060.”
According to Yahoo News, whites made up nearly 85% of the country in 1960. That number has been dropping since 1965 when immigration laws were overhauled. In 2000, the percentage of white Americans dropped to 69%. Currently non-Hispanic whites make up 64% of the population.
Marcelo Suarez-Orozco, a global expert on immigration and dean of UCLA’s Graduate School of Education Information Studies, said:
“The fast-growing demographic today is now the children of immigrants … Moving forward, the U.S. will become the first major post-industrial society in the world where minorities will be the majority.”
According to the Bureau’s 2043 census prediction white Americans will no longer hold a majority of the the United States population. They will still be, however, the most populous group in the country.
In 2060, whites are expected to make up 43% of the population while Hispanics will make up 31% of the population. The Black population is projected to grow slightly to 14.7% while the Asian population will grow to 8%.
The Census Bureau also predicts that the US population will exceed 400 million people by 2051. In 2060, the population will hit 420.3 million.
Census Bureau Director Thomas Mesenbourg said:
“The next half century marks key points in continuing trends — the U.S. will become a plurality nation, where the non-Hispanic white population remains the largest single group, but no group is in the majority.”
The Associated Press notes that becoming a “Majority-Minority” nation will have major social and political implications. President Obama won the 2012 election largely because he received 78 percent of non-white votes. The fight for racial equality may also move into a new direction as affirmative action and other racially driven legal protections are no longer needed.
The United States is also expected to see a big rise in multiracial families. There are currently 7.5 multiracial people in the United States. In 2060, that number is expected to triple to 26.7 million.
