Sami Zayn Discusses Disappointment With His Position On Main Roster

Sami Zayn has found himself in an interesting position after more than a year on the main roster. He has become a strong babyface as most of the WWE Universe expected. He’s proven himself to be one of the best in-ring performers WWE has, but he hasn’t received the push on the main roster that many fans believe he deserves. Some fans are becoming impatient, but “The Underdog From the Underground” remains hopeful.

He’s been featured in big matches with several top guys, but it’s clear that WWE officials don’t view Sami as a top guy for the company. Zayn is arguably the biggest babyface to ever come out of NXT. It’s one of the big reasons why the WWE Universe is so loyal to him, but that momentum hasn’t fully transitioned to the main roster yet. During an interview with FOX Sports, Sami Zayn commented on his own expectations in WWE.

“I guess I’d just be ready more for the highs and lows. You know, very few people – if any – come in here and just have a very linear trajectory to the top. It becomes very much… there’s highs and lows. You take two steps forward and you take a step back. Five steps forward, three steps back. It’s not a linear, chronological ascension to the top.”

“You’ve got to kind of get mentally prepared for that. I guess that’d be my advice for anybody from NXT who is going to come up to the main roster. Once you’re prepared to understand that it’s not always going to be smooth sailing, I think it makes the ride a lot more… I don’t want to say ‘bearable,’ but it makes it a lot easier for you to handle it mentally. For as tough as what we do is physically, the mental aspect can be almost as tough, if not tougher.”

In a nutshell, he’s saying that high expectations are a good thing. However, Rome wasn’t built in a day. The ascension to the top of the WWE ladder is arguably the most challenging thing to do in the industry. It’s also just a cold hard fact that not everyone can get to the top of the ladder. However, the support of the fans and quality skills inside the ring are more than enough. Sometimes, all WWE needs to do is give a wrestler an opportunity.

For instance, the WWE Money in the Bank PPV is this Sunday night. Sami Zayn has a spot in the Money in the Bank Ladder Match, but not many people are looking at him as a potential winner. Shinsuke Nakamura, Kevin Owens, and even Baron Corbin are getting the attention. A surprising win for Zayn would do wonders for his status in WWE. He wouldn’t even need to win the WWE Title to become a bigger babyface for WWE.

The powers that be clearly want to book Sami Zayn as the ultimate underdog. That worked so well for him in NXT. He rarely won a big match, which only made the fans more loyal to him. That is such a rare talent for a performer to have on WWE programming. Daniel Bryan was the last guy to get over organically like that. It creates a much stronger bond with the WWE Universe, so Sami Zayn’s future could be very bright indeed.
