Best Netflix Movies: Watch These Seven Films Starring Tom Hanks

If you’re looking for the best movies to watch on Netflix, it would be hard to go wrong with a feature starring the inimitable Tom Hanks. From classic comedies to powerful dramas, Netflix is currently hosting a handful of Tom Hanks’ movies. With skilled performances and his boyish-like charm, Tom Hanks has thrilled audiences for years with his work. His movies have grossed over $9 billion at box offices worldwide, and the talented actor has won two Oscars for Best Actor (Philadelphia, Forrest Gump). Below is a list of seven titles featuring Tom Hanks that are currently streaming on Netflix.

Larry Crowne

Once a successful leader for a company, Larry Crowne (Hanks) is laid off. Behind on his mortgage and unclear of what to do, he decides to reinvent himself and go back to college.

Directed by Hanks, Larry Crowne co-stars Julia Roberts, Cedric the Entertainer, Pam Grier, George Takei, and Bryan Cranston. This uplifting and inspirational story is a Netflix favorite.

Ithaca

When his holder brother leaves to fight in World War II, 14-year-old Homer Macauley, a bicycle telegraph messenger, comes of age in the summer of 1942.

Co-starring and directed by Meg Ryan, Ithaca is based on Pulitzer-Prize-winning author William Saroyan’s novel The Human Comedy. As Homer delivers messages of hope, love, pain, and death, he learns about his own life and of these powerful emotions.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Nine-year-old Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn) lost his father, Thomas Schell (Tom Hanks), in the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center. Oskar is certain that his father left him a final message hidden somewhere in the city. Feeling detached from his grieving mother (Sandra Bullock), the young boy searches New York City for the lock that fits the key he found in his father’s belongings. Oskar believes that if he finds the lock, he will find the secret message from his dad.

This emotionally driven story is about an innocent boy trying to make sense of his father’s loss, the horrible tragedy of 9/11, and of life itself, and it is an examination of the healing process.

Forrest Gump

In addition to Tom Hanks’ Oscar for Best Actor, Forrest Gump won five additional Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director (Robert Zemeckis), at the 1994 Academy Awards. Co-starring Gary Sinise, Sally Field, and Robin Wright, Forrest Gump often appears on lists for the Best Movies of All Time. The Seattle Times describes Tom Hanks’ performance and why this is one of the best movies on Netflix.

“Good as Wright and Sinise are in their roles as Forrest’s near-suicidal soulmates, the movie always comes back to Hanks, and director Robert Zemeckis helps him to achieve some of his finest emotional moments. When Hanks pulls back from a painful memory to claim ‘And that’s all I have to say about that,’ or he announces with pride and anguish, ‘This is my Jenny,’ he captures the dignity of a man who understands life as well as anyone.”

The Money Pit

Turner & Hooch

In another ’80s classic streaming on Netflix, Hank plays a detective that takes in the dog of a murder victim in order to find the murderer.

Both Hanks’ fans and dog lovers have enjoyed this film for years. If you’re looking for whimsical Netflix movies, then look no further than Turner & Hooch.
