Clearspring acquires AddThis
Widget provider Clearspring has acquired social bookmarking widget provider AddThis for an undisclosed sum.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but a post to the AddThis blog indicated that the acquisition came about after an ongoing working relationship between the two companies.
AddThis is one of several providers of embeddable social booking widgets that allow bloggers and website owners to offer multiple social voting and bookmarking service links from the one place. Notable AddThis users include Time, Fox, ABC, CBS and MySpace.
There’s no surprise in seeing this deal: AddThis does what it does really well, but at the same time, the notion of a single widget provider as a business model is tenuous at best. As a feature or service offered as part if a bigger company, it makes a lot more sense. Expect to see similar deals in this space.
