How Does Powerball Work?
Powerball is a multi-state lottery game that operates in 44 states, Washington, D.C., the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. It’s governed by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) and each state lottery or member operates their own game. Due to this practice, some players will find slight variations when playing Powerball in different states. Additionally, all winning Powerball tickets must be turned in and redeemed in the state where the member lottery is associated. You can not cash out a Powerball ticket in another state, simply because they play Powerball as well.
Powerball tickets cost $2 and you can add the Power Play option for an additional $1. The Power Play option multiplies non-jackpot prizes and increases the payout of the Match 5 Powerball from $1 million to $2. Because Powerball is known for having large jackpot prizes, it’s one of the nation’s most popular lottery games.
There are five white balls that range between the numbers 1 and 69 and one red Powerball between the numbers 1 and 26. You choose five numbers from the white balls and one red Powerball number per ticket. You can add the Power Play to your ticket as well. Players may select their own numbers or let the terminal make the selection for them via a Quick Pick (QP) ticket. Many Quick Pick tickets have won Powerball prizes, including the Powerball jackpot over the years.
How Many Numbers do you Need to Win on Powerball?
There are nine ways to win at Powerball. The grand prize jackpot is won by matching all five white balls and the red Powerball. You do not need to have the same order as the numbers on the ticket, though the Powerball number is not interchangeable. The white balls do not need to be in a specific order.
Powerball Prizes
Any time you match the red Powerball, you win a prize and you can multiply non-jackpot prizes via the Power Play. The grand prize is won by matching all numbers and the prize for matching all five white balls without the Powerball is $1 million. The maximum you can receive on match five wins is $2 million, regardless of how much the Power Play was. Match five prizes are paid out in lump sums and do not have an option for installments like the grand prize. The prize for matching four white balls and the red Powerball is $50,000 and this may increase when the Power Play option is added to the ticket.
When the Powerball jackpot is won, the game resets to $40 million. It continues to roll from $40 million each week until the jackpot is won again. The largest Powerball jackpot in history was won on January 13, 2016, and was a whopping $1.58 billion. There were three grand prize winners who split the jackpot and took lump sum cash payouts equaling $328 million.
