President Obama’s 10-Year-Old Pen Pal With Same-Sex Parents
San Diego, CA – President Obama’s 10-year-old pen pal was shocked when she received a letter written directly by the President of the United States. According to ClickOnDetroit, Sophia Bailey-Klugh, a 10-year-old San Diegan, had originally invited President Obama to dinner but she did not receive a response. But when she wrote a second letter thanking Obama for his position on same-sex marriage Obama actually wrote back.
Obama’s 10-year-old pen pal Sophia is the daughter of two homosexual men living in California. Back in May, when North Carolina voters approved a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, Obama announced that he had “evolved” in his position on the same-sex marriage issue. Because of this Sophia decided to write Obama on that subject.
“Dear Barack Obama,” she wrote. “It’s Sophia Bailey Klugh your friend who invited you to dinner. You don’t remember okay that’s fine. But I just wanted to tell you that I am so glad you agree that two men can love each other because I have two dad and they love each other.”
Jonathan Bailey, one of the two homosexual men, posted the letter to Facebook on October 28 and said Sophia penned the piece “unprompted.” Sophia also complained in her letter about other students at school teasing her, saying that homosexual unions are “gross and weird.”
In his response letter, President Obama suggested that Sophia remind her friends at school about the Golden Rule: “A good rule is to treat others the way you hope they will treat you.”
“Thanks again for taking the time to write me,” he continued. “I’m sorry I couldn’t make it to dinner, but I’ll be sure to tell Sasha and Malia you say hello.”
Obama’s 10-year-old pen pal will be able to tell friends this story for years to come. Hopefully, the bullies at her school will realize that you can disagree strongly with someone without being mean or hateful.
