Golden Globe Award TV Nomination Snubs & Surprises: ‘Gilmore Girls’, ‘This Is Us,’ ‘Stranger Things,’ & More [Opinion]

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association put out the 2017 Golden Globe Award nominations for its 74th annual awards show. The list was filled with plenty of deserving names, some pleasant surprises, and its fair share of snubs.

Winona Ryder, Stranger Things

Surprise. Stranger Things hype hit an all-time high this summer. Winona Ryder receiving a nomination for playing Joyce Byers is a pleasant surprise. Ryder perfectly pulled off her role of the seemingly crazy, loving mother of Will Byers. If you didn’t watch it, you’re missing out.

Speaking of Stranger Things, breakout star Millie Bobby Brown also received a nomination thanks to her brilliant performance of her character, Eleven.

Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Kelly Bishop, Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life

Snub. The reunion series that everyone was waiting for, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, did not receive any Golden Globe Award nominations. The series, which debut on Netflix in November, featured career-defining performances from all of the characters, especially Lauren Graham, Kelly Bishop, and Liza Weil (aka Paris Gellar). The Hollywood Foreign Press Association must not have been original Gilmore Girls fans back in the early 2000s when the series first aired.

Ellie Kemper, Jane Krakowski, and Tituss Burgess, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

Snub. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a hilarious Netflix Original comedy. All of the main actors in this show gave great performances and definitely deserved some kind of recognition this year.

Sophie Turner, Game of Thrones

Snub. While Sophie Turner did get a nomination for her role in Game of Thrones, none of the other characters from the HBO hit series were nominated this year. This was Sophie Turner’s season to be the star, apparently.

Mandy Moore, This Is Us

Surprise. This is a pleasant surprise. This Is Us is one of the most popular shows this fall. Mandy Moore gave an excellent performance as Rebecca Pearson in the poignant new show.

Billy Bob Thornton, Goliath

Surprise. The Amazon drama somehow scored an acting nomination for its lead, but there hasn’t been much awareness regarding the drama series. According to IMDb, the show is about a disgraced lawyer who changed careers and became an ambulance chaser who spends “more time in the bars than the courtroom.” Billy McBride (Thornton) gets a case that could “bring him redemption or at least revenge on the firm which expelled him.”

Perhaps this Golden Globe Award nominee’s new show is worth checking out.

Issa Rae, Insecure

Surprise. Another surprise from Issa Rae’s HBO comedy Insecure scoring a nomination. This show is one of the freshest TV series out right now. If this wins the Golden Globe Award, the show will definitely raise the awareness it deserves to attract newcomers.

Cuba Gooding Junior, The People v. O.J. Simpson

Snub. It is pretty shocking that Cuba Gooding Jr. got an Emmy nomination for his role as O.J. Simpson in the FX series The People v. O.J. Simpson, but the actor did not receive any nominations for a Golden Globe.

Chrissy Metz, This Is Us

Surprise. This is a nice surprise. Along with Mandy Moore, her on-screen daughter Chrissy Metz received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance as Kate Pearson on This Is Us. Metz’s character, who struggles with being obese, recently decided that she was going to get gastric bypass surgery. Does this mean Chrissy Metz is planning to get the body-altering surgery as well?

Taraji P. Henson, Empire

Snub.Where is last year’s winner for Best Actress in TV Drama? Taraji P. Henson gave an outstanding performance as Cookie Lyon on the hit series Empire. The actress did not receive any Golden Globe nominations this year.

Anthony Hopkins, Jeffrey Wright, Westworld

Snub. The men of the new hit HBO drama Westworld seem to have been forgotten at the Golden Globes this year. The science-fiction-western-thriller series was mind-blowing and thought-provoking. It was pretty shocking to see that the new series had not received any recognition from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

Orange Is the New Black

Snub. The entire cast seems to have been snubbed by the Golden Globes this year. The 2016 Emmy Awards also decided to ignore the hit Netflix series.

House of Cards

Snub. Like OITNB, the entire cast of House of Cards was shut out of this year’s Golden Globe nominations. Does the Hollywood Foreign Press Association have something against the Netflix Originals?

Nick Nolte, Graves

Surprise. Not necessarily a great surprise. This little-known show is EPIX’s first comedy series and chronicles the last likable Republican president and how he is even beginning to turn his back on the GOP. Apparently, it is worth watching. IndieWire said that Graves is “the timely political comedy you didn’t know you needed to see.”

Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black

Snub. Maslany won Best Actress in a Drama at the Emmys this year for her role in the hit series Orphan Black. However, she did not receive any nominations for a Golden Globe this year.
