Will Christian Siriano Design For Melania Trump? The ‘Project Runway’ Winner’s Diplomatic Answer

Currently, many designers who have designed for the current FLOTUS have publicly refused to dress Melania Trump. Top American designer Christian Siriano has famously dressed Michelle Obama in some gorgeous, custom-made dresses. Now the question on many people’s minds is whether Christian Siriano will design for Melania Trump? What is the Project Runway Season 4 winner’s diplomatic answer to that question?

This past summer, Michelle Obama kicked off the DNC in July in a gorgeous royal blue Christian Siriano dress. Her speech was magnificent and her dress stunning. The American designer told Vogue magazine that when he was specifically asked to design for the FLOTUS, he did take a look at some of the First Lady’s previous looks, without “psyching himself out” too much. Although he had never personally met her, his main focus was to essentially “make a great, beautiful dress.”

“It was about striking the balance with that dress. I think the top made it feel powerful and the bottom made it feel soft and kind of romantic. My personal opinion is that it represents her personality, from what I see. She’s such a powerful woman and she is so strong, but she’s also one of the kindest people there is. That’s the balance of that dress: a simple silhouette that is still elegant and romantic and covered in a different way. It was also different from what every other woman wore, which was also an interesting choice.”

Siriano told Access Hollywood that dressing Michelle Obama has been the source of a great deal of joy for the up and coming designer. The Project Runway Season 4 champion would design for her even if there was nothing in it for him.

“What’s great about Michelle is that she’s such an amazing woman and she’ll be doing great things forever. So even in 20, 30, 50 years, I would love to dress her. Even if no one covers it, even if there are no photos, it’s an honor to make clothes for her.”

He adds that Obama’s style is what makes her special as a First Lady and acknowledges that she “celebrates” young American fashion designers, like him.

“What she wears is daring, is different, it’s special. For a first lady, she takes a lot of risks. That’s what any designer wants. When we make clothes, you want a great muse that’s going to wear them. … Someone like her, she celebrates fashion, and celebrates young American designers too, which is also exciting for me, because that’s what I am.”

So, as a young American designer, the million dollar question is whether Siriano will dress the next First Lady, Melania Trump. The designer contends that dressing Melania is not the real issue. It is the stances that her husband’s administration is taking on such issues as gay rights that is the obstacle.

“Sadly, it’s really just one of those things that has nothing to do with her, it’s just obviously what she’s representing in what’s happening right now.”

The A-list designer admits that he cannot support a political figure that prevents giving rights to gay citizens. A recent newlywed, Christian Siriano married his husband Brad Walsh on July 9 of this year, so gay rights is currently an important personal issue for him.

“It would be hard for anyone, especially for someone like myself, a young gay fashion designer, I can’t support a campaign where I might not have the same rights. I just got married. There’s lots of deep things that get into it … Hopefully things will be great.”

So will Christian Siriano design for Melania Trump? His answer is simple and noncommittal. Siriano wants to wait and see what actually transpires with this administration, not rely on rumor and innuendo of what this new administration will actually do.

“I will see how it goes.”
