Fatal Attraction: “What Nobody Knew” on TV One

  • When police arrive at a New York City apartment, they are met by neighbors who point them to the bedroom where a dead woman has been gunned down, along with her daughter. However, what looks like the work of an intruder quickly leads police down the path of passion, jealousy, and a deadly betrayal.

Bronx police received a 911 call from neighbors who told them that Diamond Dunn had been shot and her face split wide open at the Monroe Houses Project on Story Avenue in the Soundview section of the Bronx. When they arrived, police found Diamond Dunn still clinging to life, but they were shocked to find another victim, her mother, Elzina Brown, who was already dead.

Both victims had been shot. Elzina Brown received a gunshot wound to the chest. Diamond Dunn was shot three times but was expected to live. She did live and was able to tell police that she had been shot by 25-year-old Raymond Mayrant, her on-again-off-again boyfriend and the father of her child.

NYC police went on the hunt for Mayrant, who police say abused Diamond Dunn, but were unable to find him. Detectives learned that Raymond Mayrant was jealous and angry with Diamond Dunn and sought revenge by shooting her. Elzina Brown was killed after she happened to leave her post as a school crossing guard to come home for lunch. However, when she arrived, she heard her daughter’s screams and attempted to help. That’s when she came into contact with Raymond Mayrant, who raised his gun and shot her dead, according to Bronx court records.

“Elzina ‘Zina’ Brown heard her daughter screaming. She responded to her daughter’s cries for help. But Raymond Mayrant, the jealous father of her child, did not just attack the younger woman, 25- year-old DIAMOND DUNN, shooting her in the head and face. He also walked into Elzina Brown’s bedroom and executed her with a single bullet at close range.”

Residents in the community were sickened with grief after hearing about Elzina Brown’s death. Many stated that she was a loving motherly type who took care of people in the neighborhood.

At first, she had also treated Raymond Mayrant as a son. The fact that he could hurt her in that manner was like the ultimate betrayal, Soundview reported.

“This should have never happened to her. She was just the nicest person. She was like a nanny to a lot of the children in the building,” added another neighbor. “It’s sad, because we lost someone who everyone trusted, and those people don’t come along all that often.”

Raymond Mayrant was on the run for about a week before he ran out of money and was located at a shelter in Warren, Ohio. He was arrested and sent to prison for the murder and the attempted murder, resulting in a sentence of 46 years to life. His first eligibility for parole is in February of 2059, prison records show.
