John Cena Vs. The Undertaker Happening At ‘WrestleMania 33’? Here’s Three Potential Opponents For Cena When WWE Heads To Orlando Next Spring

Whether you love him or hate him, you can’t deny that John Cena is the biggest star in WWE right now, and while the SmackDown show is usually good, his absence has somewhat hurt the show, as WWE’s blue brand is lacking depth in the main event scene.

There have been reports which suggest that Cena will be making his return to WWE at this coming Sunday’s Survivor Series show, but as of this writing, he’s not being advertised for the show on WWE’s official events page. The reports also said that his return at the event was going to be a one-time deal, and that he wouldn’t be a regular character again until after the new year.

When Cena finally does return to action, WWE will be on the road to WrestleMania 33. Of course, Cena has been a huge part of WWE’s biggest event of the year over the last 10-plus years, as he’s gone one-on-one with guys like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Triple H, Batista, and Shawn Michaels. Next year will probably be no different, and even though it’s way too early to know who WWE’s biggest name will be in the ring with next spring, there are three names out there that would make sense.

  • Roman Reigns

It’s not exactly a secret that WWE wants Roman Reigns to be the next John Cena, and what better way to make that happen than to have Cena pass the torch to him at WrestleMania 33? Of course, the fans probably still wouldn’t accept Reigns as the top guy, but it’s worth a shot.

As of right now, Reigns and Cena are on different brands. But, WrestleMania will obviously feature both brands, so they could do a few Raw vs. SmackDown matches at the show, and one of them could be Roman Reigns vs. John Cena.

Before the brand split, WWE was interested in doing Reigns vs. Cena, but Cena ended up getting hurt and WWE was forced to change their plans for both men. When Cena returns to action in January, he’ll presumably be healthy and ready for WrestleMania, so they could do the “torch passing” match next spring.

  • The Undertaker

WWE fans have been talking about this match for nearly two years now. Sure, it has happened in the past, but it hasn’t happened in a long time, and it never happened at a past WrestleMania.

The Undertaker is scheduled to return to SmackDown on Tuesday night for the blue brand’s 900th show. It’s unclear if we’ll get a look at what could be next for “The Deadman,” or if his appearance will lead to nothing. Most are assuming that he’ll be confronted by the Wyatt Family’s newest member, Randy Orton, and that the confrontation will lead to a match between the two in Orlando next spring.

WWE wanted to do John Cena vs. The Undertaker at this year’s WrestleMania 32, but Cena’s shoulder injury forced them to change “The Deadman’s” opponent to Shane McMahon. Rumor has it that they want to do that match at WrestleMania 33, but if Orton confronts The Undertaker on Tuesday night, then that may be their way of telling us that it’s going to be “The Phenom” vs. “The Viper” next spring.

  • AJ Styles

John Cena has been on a quest to tie Ric Flair’s record for most WWE World Heavyweight Championship wins since he lost the title to Brock Lesnar back in the summer of 2014. His most recent attempt was back at last month’s No Mercy pay-per-view, where he once again came up short in a triple threat match against AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose.

It doesn’t look like AJ Styles is going to lose the WWE World Heavyweight Championship anytime soon, and most believe that his big win over Cena back at SummerSlam was going to lead to a rematch at some point, where Cena would finally defeat Styles, and win the World Title. Well, that rematch could come at WrestleMania 33. Who knows? Maybe Ric Flair will be the special guest referee in the match where John Cena attempts to tie his record.
