Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney Accused Of Stealing From Kurt Cobain And ‘Friday Night Lights’

Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney have been accused of stealing some of their stories and slogans from two unlikely sources. The GOP candidate reportedly turned the tagline from Friday Night Lights into a campaign slogan and Ryan reportedly used a tidbit from the life of Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain during last night’s debate.

The Nirvana accusation comes straight from the internet and should probably be brushed off as a coincidence.

During the Vice Presidential debate last night Paul Ryan told a touching story about how his daughter got her nickname. Ryan said that when he saw his daughter’s ultrasound he thought that the fetus looked like a kidney bean. Ryan and his wife started started calling their daughter “bean” and the nickname has apparently stuck.

Well, after Ryan’s story the internet went nuts accusing the potential VP of stealing Cobain’s story. Nirvana fans know that the late singer and Courtney Love named their daughter Francis “Bean” Cobain for the exact same reason.

So, what do you think? Did Ryan steal Cobain’s story? Ryan is an avid Nirvana fan and has been known to stretch the truth from time to time. However, it is entirely possible that multiple have seen an ultrasound and thought: “Yes, that fetus looks like a kidney bean.”

On a slightly more serious note, the Washington Post report that the creator of Friday Night Lights sent a cease and desist letter to Mitt Romney today. Peter Berg is accusing Romney of taking the shows rallying cry, “Clear Eyes. Full Hearts. Can’t Lose,” and turning it into a political talking point.

Romney has used the phrase several times in stump speeches and even has the phrase written on his Facebook page.

Gawker reports that Romney is a big fan of Berg’s show Friday Night Lights. The feeling, however, is not mutual.

Berg writes:

“Your politics and campaign are clearly not aligned with the themes we portrayed in our series. The only relevant comparison that I see between your campaign and Friday Night Lights is in the character of Buddy Garrity – who turned his back on American car manufacturers selling imported cars from Japan.”

In case you don’t watch Friday Night Lights, this is who Berg is comparing Romney to.

What do you think? Did Paul Ryan steal Kurt Cobain’s story? Do you think Mitt Romney will change his campaign slogan?
