‘One Of The Worst I’ve Ever Seen’: Man Who Killed 2-Year-Old Girl, Slamming Her Repeatedly Into Wall, Gets Death Sentence

After just an hour of deliberation on Wednesday, a grand jury has recommended the death sentence for Glen Bates, a man convicted of brutally murdering his 2-year-old daughter, WCPO News is reporting.

The jury had asserted that Bates was “the principal offender” in the torture, beating, and killing of Glenara Bates in 2015. He was found guilty of aggravated murder on Monday. The specific use of the word “aggravated” murder had allowed the state to seek the death penalty against the 34-year-old man.

Glenara’s 10-year-old sister had testified against her father in court saying that he had held her 2-year-old sister by the legs and banged her head against the wall until she stopped crying.

The older sister said her younger sister’s eyes never opened again.

This was the last blow Assistant Prosecutor Mark Piepmeier used to close his case and hone in on his final arguments.

“After receiving this type of trauma, you’re not going to be crying, you’re not going to be eating, you’re not going to be doing anything—all you’re going to be doing is dying, and that’s what happened.”

Bates had accused his girlfriend Andrea Bradley of beating Glenara, saying if he did hurt her it was done accidentally, adding that his girlfriend was the one who abused the 2-year-old child on a regular basis.

Dr. Jennifer Schott, the deputy coroner who conducted the little girl’s autopsy, called it “one of the worst I’ve ever seen.” Some members of the jury could not hold back tears as Schott showed over 70 images of the battered and bruised body of the 2-year-old girl.

Schott told the court that the 2-year-old girl weighed only 13 pounds when she died. This is less than half the average weight of a 2-year-old person. In other words, Glenara’s weight was that of a 3-month-old baby.

Her body was also dotted with “C-shaped scars,” consistent with bite marks. Bates had confessed in a taped police interview that he bit the little girl on her chest and arms, bizarrely adding that he was only playing with her and not trying to injure her.

Dr. Jennifer Schott said Glenara’s head injuries were the same as a young child being shaken violently and slammed into a door frame or wall. Schott said the wounds on the 2-year-old girl’s legs and back were consistent with being beaten with a belt.

Investigators say the girl’s mother, Andrea Bradley, had beaten the little girl with a yellow belt while Bates used to flog her with a pink belt. Glenara had a deep gash on her forehead that was held by sewing thread and also had bones broken in multiple places.

The deputy coroner also revealed that Glenara had a terrible diaper rash that stretched from her lower back down to her thighs. In Bate’s recorded interrogation, he said that Glenara was made to sleep in a downstairs bathtub because she had a bed-wetting problem. Investigators say the tub was littered with feces. The prosecutor said the conditions that the little girl lived were worse than deplorable.

“This baby ate and slept in a bathtub filled with feces and blood. You wouldn’t treat your dog like this.”

When Glenara’s dead body was brought to the hospital on March 29, 2015, coroner Kode Sammarco was shocked at the state of the little girl’s body. He said it was difficult to tell when the last time she had been given anything to eat or drink. Sammarco said it took a forensic pathologist four hours to document all the wounds and scars on Glenara’s little body.

The coroner said the memory of the little girl still haunted him beyond words.

“There is no doubt in my mind this child was tortured for the majority of her pitifully short life.”

Prosecutors lambasted Joy and Family Services for taking the child from foster care and given her back to her mother. The agency has since acknowledged the poor handling of the case with several caseworkers resigning their posts. Glenara’s grandmother sued the child’s caseworkers, the county commissioners and JFS Director Moira Weir.

Andrea Bradley will be tried separately; she also faces the death penalty.

Both parents turned down plea deals.
