Zooey Deschanel Talks About Her First Time To Direct ‘New Girl,’ Teases Upcoming Season 6 Episodes

The premiere of New Girl Season 6 was made extra special because its leading lady Zooey Deschanel directed the episode. It was the 36-year-old’s first time to don the directorial hat but she described it as a “really great” experience that was fun at the same time. The mother-of-one admits that her first directorial stint was challenging, but she’s thankful that she was assisted.

“I didn’t want to take too much time to be watching playback because it takes a lot of time, and I wanted to make sure I was really focusing on the other actors,” she told People. “Luckily, we have a directing producer and I kind of let him be a barometer for me.”

Deschanel further teased fans to tune in because they’ve “got a lot of good episodes coming up.” One of them is a crossover episode with fellow FOX series Brooklyn Nine-Nine.The crossover episode will begin on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and end on New Girl where most interactions among the characters will take place. However, Damon Wayans Jr. won’t appear in the episode because the New Girl actor once guest-starred on Brooklyn Nine-Nine as a different character.

Actor Andy Samberg told the Entertainment Weekly that he’s a fan of crossover episodes, and it’s a privilege to spend time with the cast members of New Girl.

“Obviously it’s a flashy decision, an attention-grabbing kind of thing to do, but I genuinely am a fan of crossover episodes. I think they’re really funny and fun. And I love New Girl. Always have. I am excited to hang with those guys.”

How exactly will they stage the crossover episode?

According to Samberg, Schmidt has to go to New York to receive an award from his former high school. His pals accompany him, and in one scene, Jake has to commandeer the car driven by Jess herself.

The first episode of New Girl Season 6 features Jess, who’s not yet over Nick. To cope up with the fact that Nick went to New Orleans to be with Reagan, Jess takes up seemingly ridiculous hobbies. Woodworking, for example, doesn’t appear to be a fancy hobby when you’re living with other people.

Newlyweds Schmidt and Cece are searching for the house of their dreams. The ever helpful Winston, on the other hand, is trying to assist Aly’s sister Leslie, fulfill her dream of becoming a real-estate agent.

Schmidt and Cece’s celebration for their “new house” was short-lived after discovering that Leslie sold them a house that wasn’t even for sale, to begin with. Leslie confesses that she just Google’s “house” and sees the stuff that comes up.

Jess volunteers to be the couple’s agent which further aggravates Schmidt. The “House Hunt” episode basically focused on Schmidt and Cece’s yearning for a house as well as their struggle to secure a loan for their dream.

Will viewers still see Reagan?

TVLine confirmed that Megan Fox would return for New Girl Season 6. It is believed that she will contribute much to the show because she reportedly signed up for up to eight episodes. However, fans might not see her until midseason after announcing her pregnancy last April. Will her absence give Nick and Jess the chance to rekindle what they had?

It can be remembered that Fox appeared on New Girl Season 5 to fill in for Deschanel who had just given birth to her first baby with Jacob Pechenik. Many doubted Fox’s comedic capabilities at first but eventually found her hilarious.

Prior to her role as Reagan, Fox also appeared on other comedy projects such as This is 40, Hope and Faith, and Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.

New Girl Season 6 airs every Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. on FOX.
