Top Six ‘American Horror Story’ Season 6 Theme Theories

American Horror Story Season 6 will finally premiere tonight, and fans are still trying to guess the theme. And that’s just how Ryan Murphy and FX like it. They’ve been especially tight lipped about it this year, putting out teasers that are intentionally confusing and misleading. Months ago, FX President John Landgraf said that most of the teasers that have been put out for American Horror Story Season 6 are intentional misdirects. But tonight is the night that AHS fans will finally know this year’s theme. Of course, many people have theories. Let’s take a look at the top six.

1. Charles Manson/Cult

The supporting evidence for this one goes all the way back to American Horror Story Season 1. Remember the cult members that came after Vivian and Violet? They were followers of a serial killer. And Movie Pilot recently noted that Tate Langdon made a reference to Helter Skelter the same season. And, speaking of Tate Langdon, there are two more hints here. One is in the name of this American Horror Story character. His first name is the same as the last name of one of Charles Manson’s most famous victims – actress Sharon Tate. Want more proof? Take a look at this.

American Horror Story fans have noticed that the items hanging from the mobile in this Season 6 teaser spell out PIG, which is the word Charles Manson spelled out in Sharon Tate’s blood after she was killed. Then there are all the teasers that include spiders, something for which the serial killer has shown an obsession during his time in jail. Oh, and one more thing – the script description of the character that Evan Peters will play in Season 6 says that he “could be a cult leader or a movie star.”

2. The Lost Colony of Roanoke

This one has only a couple of supporting pieces of evidence, but one is very strong. About a month and a half ago, TMZ released photos taken at one of the sets being used for filming American Horror Story Season 6. They include what could be a colonial-era farm, including a tree with CROATOAN carved into its bark. In case you don’t know, the Croatoans were a Native American tribe that settlers lived near in the late 1500s. When the over 100 colonists disappeared, no evidence was left behind, except a tree with CROATOAN carved into its bark. Hmmmm. And – Ryan Murphy has said before that there are several clues to the theme for Season 6 of American Horror Story in Season 1. The Croatoan tribe and the lost colony were referenced several times that season.

3. The Mist

Among the teasers that FX released for American Horror Story Season 6 was one with some kind of creature crawling down railroad tracks, shrouded in mist. But why should we believe that means anything? Because not long ago, both Rotten Tomatoes and TV Guide briefly published TV listings that said American Horror Story: The Mist. Both sites quickly pulled the AHS title, but was it a real leak? Or was it another intentional misdirect by FX? And what about the fact that Stephen King wrote a novella titled The Mist? Does that make it more or less likely that it’s the real theme?

4. Classic Horror

What if several of the teasers for American Horror Story Season 6 are hints at the actual theme, but only one is the real deal? Several evoke thoughts of classic horror films. There’s the child in a bassinet that is reminiscent of Rosemary’s Baby. And don’t forget about Vivian’s baby in Season 1. Then there’s the one titled Blind Date. This teaser for Season 6 of American Horror Story strongly suggests Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Others suggest Texas Chainsaw Murder and Nosferatu. Maybe Season 6 will be full of classic horror throwbacks.

5. The Antichrist

Let’s go back to the baby in the bassinet. What if that’s the real American Horror Story Season 6 teaser and it’s about an Antichrist theme? And what if it ties back to Season 1, where Ryan Murphy said there were clues to this year’s theme? There is still the matter of Vivian’s baby. As Movie Pilot reminds us, Ryan Murphy has said that Season 6 would include children in some way. It’s possible that Season 6 will include flashbacks to Michael’s childhood to tie it to what’s going on with him in the present.

6. Boarding School

A boarding school would also have a strong children element and could tie in Michael. There is a teaser with images of children in school, banging on their desks.

And there were references in the Hotel season finale to the Thacher School. Maybe both Will Drake’s son and Jon Lowe’s daughter Scarlett both end up going to Thacher School.

All we can do at this point is speculate. But the wait will soon be over.

Season 6 of American Horror Story premieres tonight at 10 pm ET on FX.
