Apple iPhone 7 Vs Apple iPhone 6S: How Do Their Specs Compare?

Apple has officially unveiled their latest handset, which will hit shelves later this month. However, the device isn’t quite the revolutionary upgrade that many fans were hoping for, still drawing parallels to Apple’s current iteration, the iPhone 6S. So how does Apple’s new iPhone 7 compare to the current iPhone 6S? In this article, we’ll compare the two leading devices from Apple to help you decide whether or not it’s worth the upgrade to Apple’s latest iPhone release later this month.

What’s on the outside?

The way products look and feel has always been of paramount importance for Apple. With that in mind, many fans were hoping for yet another revolutionary shake-up with the iPhone 7’s design, however, what Apple presented was largely similar to that of their current iPhone 6S. According to Digital Spy, the promised revolutionary design overhaul is now likely to come as part of next year’s iPhone 8 release, with the iPhone 7 simply acting as something of a stop-gap.

That being said, Apple has made a few subtle design changes with the release of the iPhone 7. For a start, Apple has chucked out those controversial antenna lines along the back and side of the iPhone, creating a sleeker design approach. However, Apple’s biggest design choice with the iPhone 7 is even more controversial. Apple has completely ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack, with users now having to choose between wireless headphones, using a headphone adapter, or Apple’s new included earbuds.

In terms of choice, there’s more to offer this time around, though. The existing gold, silver, and rose gold are all still available, however, the space grey model has been ditched in favour of both a matte black and gloss black variant. It definitely looks like Apple wants to give consumers more choice when it comes to picking their iPhone.

It’s also worth considering how the displays on the two devices compare. The iPhone 6S features a 4.7-inch Retina display with 1334 x 750 pixels, and that’s largely unchanged with the iPhone 7. If you compare that to the 2560 x 1440 pixel QHD packaged with the Samsung Galaxy S7, Apple’s devices are lacking in the display department. That being said, Apple insists that they have made several improvements when it comes to the screen on their handset, claiming the iPhone 7 offers greater pixel quality and toughness.

What’s on the inside?

Whilst the exterior of any handset is undeniably important, a phone is nothing but a fancy paper weight without some decent specs inside. According to the Wall Street Journal, whilst Apple’s handsets still aren’t playing the same specs game as many leading Android phones, the iPhone 7 has received a considerable boost over its predecessor.

The 1.84GHz dual-core A9 chip found in the iPhone 6S is now an A10 Fusion chipset, which Apple promises will provide three times the power. Alongside a lot more raw power, Apple is also giving their handsets an upgrade when it comes to storage. Finally ditching the 16GB variant available with previous iPhone models, the iPhone 7 will be available with internal storage varying from a base model of 32GB all the way up to a whopping 256GB of storage on their top model.

Users of the iPhone 6S will notice absolutely no difference when it comes to the software driving the iPhone 7. Unlike Android devices, there’s no variation in software between Apple’s devices, with both the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 set to receive Apple’s upcoming iOS 10 update. Apple has confirmed that none of iOS 10’s features will be exclusive to their new handset, meaning that owners of the iPhone 6S needn’t worry when it comes to the software driving their handset.

On the outside, it’s more than fair to say that the iPhone 6S and 7 are largely the same handset. However, Apple is still making significant strides when it comes to updating the specs driving their handsets, meaning that even iPhone 6S users should see a considerable performance boost with the iPhone 7.
