Will Nick Viall Finally Find What He’s Looking For As ‘The Bachelor’?

The surprising announcement of Nick Viall’s role as the next star of The Bachelor has many people wondering if the fourth time will be the charm for him. Viall famously made it to runner-up on Andi Dorfman and Kaitlyn Bristowe’s cycles of The Bachelorette, and his summer romance with Bachelor alum Jen Saviano is currently playing out on Bachelor in Paradise. (Spoiler alert: It doesn’t work out.)

But now, Nick has yet another chance for a lasting romance, and this time, he’ll dole out all of the roses. In an interview with People magazine, Bachelor host Chris Harrison explained why Nick was chosen to headline the next season of the ABC dating show over fan favorite Luke Pell.

“It’s about giving him his chance to find love. Who deserves it more than him?” Harrison said.

“There are plenty of women out there that find him adorable and lovable and irresistible. I have no doubt that he will find the woman of his dreams.”

Harrison went on to point out that the reality TV dating game has actually worked for Viall in the past and that the 35-year-old shouldn’t change anything about himself for his fourth go-around on the franchise.

“It has worked for him. The previous two times he was on The Bachelorette, he fell in love and he had his heart broken. So he is that guy that will go there,” Harrison said of Viall.

“My advice [to Nick] – and I’ve already texted and talked back-and-forth with him – is don’t change anything. We have brought you on as the Bachelor. You’re our guy. Just be yourself. Be that same, sweet, sincere human being that everybody loves and it’ll work.”

Unlike most Bachelor stars, fans have already seen no less than three of Nick’s girlfriends. (Four, if you count his one BIP date with Amanda Stanton.) But because his former flames, Andi Dorfman, Kaitlyn Bristowe, and Jen Saviano, and even Amanda Stanton, are all so different, it’s hard to make sense of what type of lady he’s looking for.

But last year, Nick Viall talked about what kind of woman he wants in an interview with Bustle’s I Want It That Way podcast.

“I’ve always been attracted to very strong personalities in women,” Viall said. “And while Kaitlyn and Andi are very different, they both have very strong personalities.”

Nick also said he likes confident women, and he wants to find someone who will challenge him.

“I want to meet someone who brings out the best version of me, and hopefully, I have an opportunity to bring out that in them,” Viall said. “I like people with edge — I have a little bit of edge to me — and people who don’t always play it safe, and are exciting.”

But perhaps most telling? Viall, who has been rejected twice as he was about to propose on The Bachelorette, said this:

“I want to be with someone who wants to be with me.”

Nick Viall’s final dates with Jen Saviano haven’t played out yet on BIP, but it’s clear that he didn’t end up engaged to her. While teasers show Viall shopping for engagement rings with ABC’s resident jeweler, Neil Lane, for a third time, Saviano told ET Online she wouldn’t want Nick to propose to her after only a few weeks of dating.

“I wouldn’t want [Nick] to propose [on the finale], no,” Jen said. “We’re just not there yet… I’m very happy with where we’re at, I just don’t know if it’s enough right now. Certainly not enough for an engagement.”

Indeed, some fans questioned why Nick Viall returned for another round of potential heartbreak on Bachelor in Paradise. Nick told Glamour he has no regrets about putting his heart on the line in the name of reality TV love.

“I obviously have a very interesting past when it comes to my time here,” Viall said.

“I don’t want to be a Trivial Pursuit question. Right now, people know me as the guy that professed his love for two women on national television. I’ve asked two sets of parents for permission to propose, and it didn’t work out. I don’t deny that I had very strong feelings for Andi and Kaitlyn, but looking back, I’m very lucky that they made the decisions that they did.”

Viall also said that while there are a lot of misconceptions about him, in the end, he’s just a regular guy looking for a wife.

“A lot of people say I’m a lot nicer as a person than they thought I was, but I don’t know what that means,” Nick said.

“I’m definitely snarky..I’m quick to open my mouth before I think sometimes, and I’ll put my foot in my mouth a little bit. I like to think I’m a nice guy and have a good heart, and I’m a loyal person. For the people who do get to know me, they tend to be a little surprised [by that]. Also, people weirdly tell me that I’m a lot taller in person.”

Incidentally, all three of Nick Viall’s reality TV exes commented on his casting as the next series star. Surprisingly, Dorfman was the most positive, while Saviano seemed downright bitter. And Kaitlyn Bristowe found The Simpsons more interesting than Nick’s news.
