‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Season 2, Episode 9: Where Did The Abigail Go?

Episode 9 of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead saw a group of characters return to the Abigail. Unfortunately, it appears the sea vessel has gone missing. So, what happened to Strand’s boat?

Spoiler alert: This article discusses Season 2, Episode 9 (entitled “Los Muertos”) of AMC’s Fear The Walking Dead. Please proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.

In Episode 9 of Fear the Walking Dead, Victor Strand (Colman Domingo) and Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) convinced Madison (Kim Dickens) to return to his boat, the Abigail, rather than continue looking for her son, Nick (Frank Dillane). After all, they were nearly out of gas, and the Abigail is a reliable source of clean drinking water. However, when they finally returned to the ship, they discovered it missing.

According to Fear‘s showrunner, Dave Erickson, the Abigail is just like any character in Fear the Walking Dead, if you didn’t see what happened, there is a chance she will turn up again.

“The Abigail is like a character that sort of disappears. We did not see her run aground, we did not see her sink, so there is always a possibility that she could reappear,” Erickson told Entertainment Weekly.

Strand suspected the military took the Abigail. This is entirely possible as, earlier in Season 2 of Fear the Walking Dead, when Nick returned to shore on a mission for Strand, the military appeared to be out in force over the water. A vessel like the Abigail, that can convert sea water to clean drinking water, could be a valuable resource to the military.

In fact, it would be a valuable resource to anyone who saw the Abigail and realized this. So, while the military might have taken the Abigail, it is just as likely to be a random person, or group, wandering past, looking for a safe haven.

However, fans of Fear the Walking Dead also know that some of the characters the core group met up with while at sea might be more likely to have taken the ship.

Could Alex (Michelle Ang) and Jack (Daniel Zovatto) have taken the Abigail? After all, Alex knows the boat and is mad enough with the crew for not taking her in when she and Jake (Brendan Meyer) were floating at sea on a raft from the doomed Flight 462. The last we saw of Alex was when she was involved with Jack’s group and Madison rescued Travis (Cliff Curtis) from them by returning one of their crew members in a hostage exchange. What Jack’s group didn’t know though was that their hostage, Reed (Jesse McCartney), had been killed and reanimated. Reed was the brother of the man leading Jack’s group, Connor (Mark Kelly). While Connor was bitten by Reed during the hostage exchange, there is, once again, the suggestion that if the audience did not see him die, he may still be alive. Perhaps Jack or Alex cut off Connor’s arm to avoid the spread of infection, much the same way Rick (Andrew Lincoln) chopped off Hershel’s (Scott Wilson) leg in The Walking Dead. If this happened, and Connor is still alive, then it would be further incentive to take the Abigail from the group.
