Serena Williams and her boyfriend, Alexis Ohanian, have gotten very public ever since her Wimbledon win. With the start of Olympics 2016, he has tweeted all the updates of Serena and her sister Venus’ progress, making sure that he stays on top of tennis news from afar.
Alexis Ohanian, who is the founder of Reddit, is trying to keep his girlfriend’s positive outlook at this year’s Olympics despite all the early grief she experienced. Serena and Venus, who are considered unbeatable in women’s doubles tennis, were defeated by Czech pair Lucie Safarova and Barbora Strycova in two straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
This was a shocker as Serena and Venus “entered Sunday’s match with a 15-0 career record in the Olympics, winning the gold medal in women’s doubles every time they entered the event — in 2000, 2008 and 2012,” according to KGO-TV.
Most recently, they won Wimbledon women’s doubles easily, showing their dominance in the world of tennis. They were definitely favorites to win the event at the Rio Olympics.
Serena was frank about the outcome against the Czech players.
“It was a really tough match for us and a really tough draw, but we’re used to tough draws,” she said. “We honestly didn’t play our best whatsoever tonight. We played terrible and that basically showed in the results. I don’t know why. I wasn’t playing the way I needed to play, I wasn’t crossing the way I needed to cross, it was what it was.”
It sounds as if it really was an off-day for the Williams sisters.
Her boyfriend, on the other hand, was much more generous about their devastating loss. He tweeted, “Tough loss for the #WilliamsSisters. Still the greatest. #Rio2016.”
On Twitter, he has been avidly supporting the world number one, posting about her every win and major press appearances.
The tweet that is currently pinned on top of his account is the interview she did with Vogue, in which she said that her favorite app was Reddit.
The funny thing about this interview is that Serena revealed that her boyfriend had not done anything super romantic for her.
During the 73 questions session, the greatest female tennis player hinted that Alexis could step up his game a bit. When the interviewer asked what the most romantic thing that a guy has ever done for her, she promptly responded, “[I]t hasn’t happened yet.”
Their relationship first came to light when Serena was in the press for taking her phone back from a pickpocketer, who swiped it off her table at a restaurant. Alexis Ohanian was having dinner with her.
“They’ve been keeping their romance under wraps, but Serena Williams and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian are going strong,” reports Page Six. “We’re told the private tennis star took her techie beau along to a Web video shoot in Florida over the weekend.”
By the sound of his tweets, Alexis Ohanian is not in Rio yet, but there is a high chance that if Serena Williams manages to get into the last rounds of the tennis tournament, he will be in the courtside seats cheering her on. Maybe, that’s something romantic he could do for her this Olympics season.
Alexis was certainly there for her at Wimbledon, uploading pictures of her basking in glory when she won the championship title. While their busy schedules have kept them apart, when it comes to important moments, it looks like they make time and space for each other.
Although Venus has tumbled out of both single and doubles portion of Olympics tennis, her sister still prevails in the singles event. Serena faces Alize Cornet in her second-round match.
