‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Trailer Premieres During Olympics

The second trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is confirmed to make its debut sometime during the 2016 Summer Olympics coverage from Rio de Janeiro airing on Thursday, August 11. The news comes directly from a tweet on the official Star Wars Twitter account.

Fans eager to set their DVR may be disappointed to learn an exact air time, or even an approximate timeframe, of when the trailer is expected to make its appearance has yet to be announced. According to the NBC TV listings, gymnastics and swimming are the major competitions being broadcast during the primetime slot that evening. Beach volleyball, rowing, water polo, and kanoe/kayak competitions are scheduled for the daytime hours.

It has been nearly a month since new footage from Rogue One has been revealed. During Star Wars Celebration Europe 2016, a behind-the-scenes reel was shown off to fans to give a glimpse into the production process. The video showed scenes that were shot on location, rather than on set with a green screen backdrop. Most of the clips were fast-paced action shots, and many a Stormtrooper were shown taking a beating.

The announcement of the second trailer was quite plain and simple, not offering many clues other than the following tagline: “A rebellion built on hope.” There was no indication of whether it would be another teaser trailer or a full-length trailer, either, leaving fans to speculate on what may be revealed come Thursday.

Whatever scenes are shown, fans have proven to be tenacious when it comes to dissecting every second looking for clues about the next Star Wars film to date. Even from the Celebration Reel, viewers were able to uncover the return of a character. As previously reported by The Inquisitr, actor Jimmy Smits has confirmed he makes at least a cameo appearance in Rogue One in the role of Bail Organa, who is the adoptive father of Princess Leia in the prequel trilogy. Since Rogue One takes place between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Organa has been spotted in Rogue One in a brief scene in this fatherly role.

Cameos and returning characters are of keen interest to fans for their nostalgic value, and because it is the characters and their relationships that tie the Star Wars films together. Making a highly anticipated return in Rogue One is Darth Vader. As reported by The Inquisitr last month, director Gareth Edwards (Monsters, Godzilla) has confirmed Darth Vader is a returning character who will make more than a passing cameo appearance. However, the Sith Lord has not been seen (or heard) much since the confirmation.

Instead, a focus seems to be on introducing the characters new to the film series, like Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso and Forest Whitaker’s Sam Gerrera. Even at Comic-Con International: San Diego, the big reveal was a character named Endrio Two Tubes. It’s quite possible the reveal was made at Comic-Con just weeks ago to prime viewers for his appearance in the upcoming trailer. Per the official Facebook page, he seems to play a crucial party in the Rogue One storyline.

“Edrio Two Tubes is a mercenary pilot who flies alongside his eggmate, Benthic. The two share the nickname derived from the breathing apparatus that allows their Tognath physiology to process oxygen atmospheres. Edrio’s home world Yar Togna was conquered and occupied by the Empire, forcing him to flee as a refugee. Desiring to strike back at the Empire, Edrio and Benthic have allied with Saw Gerrera.”

The first official teaser trailer also focused on the original cast members, and made its debut during Good Morning America. It can be viewed in its entirety in the video below.
