J.K. Rowling Says 'Harry Potter' Is Done

Fans hoping that the latest release of Harry Potter books means a new series will be disappointed. J.K. Rowling has confirmed she is done with the wizard now. That won't stop fans from hoping for something in the future.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was released in bookshops in the U.K. on July 30. From midnight, fans were able to buy the book, with many queuing outside shops to be the first in line for the new novel. It turned out that the novel was a script, but that didn't stop it from topping the charts in the country. It isn't a surprise, considering it became the most pre-ordered book on, and Waterstones announced that it had more than 100,000 copies pre-ordered just last week, according to the Guardian.

There are negative reviews of the script, but the majority of fans who have reviewed on Amazon are positive about it. They love Harry Potter and want to see more. The problem is Rowling is done with the wizard now. She says that the character goes through so much in the latest books that it is time to give him a break.

That doesn't mean there is going to be no more from the universe. Rowling kept the universe alive after the end of the original book series by creating her site, Pottermore, where she regularly shares updates on characters. There are articles and short stories released now and then, along with insights into the creation of characters that fans love and hate.

She is also working on the series set in the same universe, but before Harry's birth. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will be out in November, and there will likely be more movies to follow with Newt Scamander as the lead character. There may be other characters that fans decide they want her to focus on, and she may find the stories surrounding them. Is it possible that we will get to see Harry's children as they grow up in Hogwarts? What about his grandchildren?

Rowling does have other novels that she will want to work on. After years in the young adult genre, she has recently taken steps into novels for older adults. Among those are her Cormoran Strike novels, written under her pen name, Robert Galbraith. The novels are going to be turned into a BBC series after being so successful in the written form. Rowling hasn't said if she is done with those characters yet, but the last novel was left open for the character's return.

While it looks like more Harry Potter novels won't happen, there was the hope that a version of Pokémon GO would be created and released. The Telegraph reported that one fake news site released statements from Niantic to say that it would start work on a Harry Potter version of the game. This definitely isn't true, and it looks like the rights to the universe haven't been given up to create the game fans would love to see.

That doesn't mean something like this won't come in the future. For now, fans will just have to deal with the Pokémon version, and look forward to any Hogwart-inspired games that may come.
For now, Rowling is done. Harry Potter will still be around on Pottermore, but she has no intention of creating any more books or plays. That being said, there are always prequels and stories with other characters that could be told. Harry Potter fans do have Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them to look forward to at the end of the year, and others set in this time period to follow later.
