‘Guardians Of The Galaxy 2’: James Gunn Reveals Peter Quill’s Father, Explains Why It’s Not A Spoiler

Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is now less than a year away. Because of the success of the 2014 original, there’s a whole lot of excitement surrounding the follow-up, which ultimately breeds rumors. And plenty of them.

But rather than not responding to this speculation, and allowing it to grow into online discussions that will increase the anticipation of the film, Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2‘s writer and director James Gunn has taken to Facebook himself to reveal who Peter Quill’s father is in the film.

At the same time as making this revelation, which it was previously believed was going to be kept secret until the release of the film, Gunn also took the opportunity to insist and explain why it’s not a spoiler at all.

Obviously those of you who don’t want to take this risk shouldn’t read ahead. So here’s your SPOILER warning, just in case you didn’t take the hint.

At first James Gunn warned those reading that if they didn’t want the identity of Star-Lord’s father in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 to be revealed, they probably should “stay off the internet until May and definitely unfollow me and don’t watch our trailer or other ads.”

Gunn then revealed, “There have been a minority of folks who have questioned and even been angry, that I and Marvel would reveal something so major months before the film comes out.”

Before adding, “If we lived in a perfect world, I wouldn’t tell you ANYTHING before you walked in to see Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2. I wouldn’t tell you Groot was now Baby Groot, I wouldn’t tell you Mantis was in the movie, I wouldn’t say that Ayesha and Taserface are our antagonists, that Yondu and Nebula have incredibly important roles in the film, nor would i tell you that Quill’s father is Ego The Living Planet.”

We already know that Kurt Russell would be portraying Quill’s father, but the fact that it is Ego The Living Planet is information that was revealed at San Diego Comic-Con last weekend. In the comics Peter Quill’s father was J’son, an alien that looked like a human, while Ego is a sentient planet. In GOTG 2 he is still a powerful god but he takes the form of a human, which is where Russell steps in.

Continuing on in his Facebook post, James Gunn went on to explain exactly why the revelation of Peter Quill’s father isn’t a spoiler.

He wrote, “That said, knowing who Quill’s father is will not diminish your enjoyment of the film in any way. The story is not built to be a shocking twist in the same way Luke’s father was Darth, Soylent Green was people, Rosebud was a sled, or that the pretty woman from Crying Game had a penis (I guess I should have said spoilers before all that). Ego [is] the emotional center of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 from the beginning to the end, and is not a twist.”

To emphasize the point even further, Gunn then signed off by writing, “And believe me – there are many, many more surprises we still have in store for you from Vol. 2 – hopefully the biggest of which is how much you’ll love the movie itself. Because, to me, that’s the only twist that matters.”

We’ll finally get to see some of the surprises that James Gunn has tantalizingly teased will be in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 when it’s finally released on May 5, 2017.
