New Nintendo 3DS Games: Level-5 Announces ‘Lady Layton’, ‘Dragon Quest 8’ Delayed, ‘Street Fighter’ Classics Head For eShop Sale

Whilst the video games industry is busy speculating around Nintendo’s next console and what form it will take, their current 3DS is experiencing stellar performance. The platform is seeing more sales for Nintendo than ever before, with a whole host of new games still in the pipeline for Nintendo’s incredibly successful handheld. Support for Nintendo’s current handheld doesn’t show any sign of dying down yet, with new games announced for the new system and already announced games given release dates.

According to Siliconera, the Nintendo 3DS is to receive one more game in the Professor Layton series with Lady Layton, announced by Level-5 today. However, Lady Layton will take something of a different approach to previous releases in the series, with Level-5 taking the decision not to focus on the series’ main protagonist with this release. Lady Layton will instead follow the story of Hershel Layton’s daughter, Catriel, as she resumes her father’s work, with a little help from popular series characters.

Whilst Lady Layton may not be the new addition to the Professor Layton franchise that some fans were waiting for, Level-5 has received praise for switching the series up and introducing a female protagonist to take it forward. Lady Layton is also likely to be the last game in the series to launch on Nintendo 3DS.

It also appears that Level-5 are preparing for an era post-3DS with the release of Lady Layton, too. Whilst the game’s main platform will be Nintendo’s 3DS, it will also be available to download on Android and iOS through their respective marketplaces. Level-5 are yet to confirm whether or not the title will be the same across all three platforms, or if the 3DS version will act as a full retail release, with the Android and iOS versions being a free download with microtransactions.

The release of Lady Layton isn’t the only big news surrounding Nintendo’s 3DS right now, however. According to My Nintendo News, fans of the Dragon Quest franchise have been left disappointed following Nintendo’s decision to delay the 3DS release of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King until 2017 in Europe. However, the first Dragon Quest title for Nintendo 3DS, Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past is still penned for a release in the region this September.

Nintendo didn’t cite any particular reason for the delay and Dragon Quest VIII is still expected to be released in North America this year. With that taken into consideration, the game’s European delay is likely something to do with the various languages that the game will need to be translated to before releasing in the region.

Fans will be compensated for that loss this week, though, with the release of three classic Street Fighter games exclusively on the New 3DS. According to Wired, three of the finest games in Capcom’s Street Fighter series are making their way to Nintendo’s handheld this week. Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting, Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers, and Street Fighter Alpha II will all go on sale on the 3DS eShop from Thursday. However, they won’t be compatible with older Nintendo 3DS models.

Despite the Nintendo NX now just around the corner, with an official announcement from Nintendo later this year and a release in early 2017, Nintendo’s current and incredibly successful handheld isn’t slowing down anytime soon. A combination of support from Nintendo and third party publishers is a testament to that.
