Many party insiders believe that Pence is high on Trump's list for potential running mates, and he seems to check off a lot of important boxes. He is very conservative -- and admittedly so -- but has a more even-keeled demeanor, a good contrast to the shoot-from-the-hip style that Trump employs. It would be a relatively safe pick compared to the potential of picking Michael Flynn, a retired general and registered Democrat.

Pence is also seen as a relatively important player in the party, which would ease fears of whether Trump can attract a serious running mate. And he presides over what could be an important state for Trump, as Indiana may shape up to be a key battleground.

Experts said a Trump-Pence ticket would be well-balanced, lending more credibility to Trump in the minds of uneasy voters.

"One thing you can say about Mike Pence is he's got a very calm, steady demeanor that in some ways is a little Reaganesque," Christine Mathews, a Republican pollster for former Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, told the Associated Press. "He's a counterbalance to Trump in that way."

But it would also take a great commitment on the part of Pence, who would have to forgo running for governor again per Indiana laws. There has been some sentiment among some party sources that accepting a position as Trump's running mate could be a very risky proposition, as a big loss for Trump could taint whoever chooses to cast their lot with him. If Pence had fears that Trump could not be elected, it would represent a big risk to accept the position as running mate.

Those who watch Donald Trump's Indiana rally live online will also see if the GOP presumptive nominee continues his strong words on the recent racial tension stemming from police shootings. After police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Falcon Heights, Minnesota, shot and killed black men in separate incidents, tensions reached a boiling point when a lone gunman opened fire on police officers in Dallas, killing five.

Trump had an ominous prediction for the direction of the nation following the violence.

"We are in a divided nation," Trump said (via CNN). "I looked two nights ago and you were having trouble in 11 different cities, big, big trouble. And the press actually plays it down. I mean, you were having big, big trouble in many cities. And I think that might be just the beginning for this summer."

Trump has spoken often in support of police officers, saying during a speech on Monday that officers see harassment similar to what soldiers returning from the Vietnam War faced. He has also spoken in support of giving police more latitude to do their jobs.

Trump's words on crime and his support of police officers also seem to reflect what will be the official platform of the Republican National Committee. The RNC has been working on the official platform that will be unveiled at next week's convention, with crime taking an important part of it.
