‘The Warriors’ Will Be Adapted Into A TV Series Directed By Marvel’s Russo Brothers

The Warriors are coming back out to play.

The beloved 1979 film is being adapted into a TV series, according to Deadline.

Paramount and Hulu will collaborate to turn the cult classic into a one-hour drama with plans to have it span into a series. But it won’t be exactly like the original, the companies will be “adding [their] own unique brand of grit, pulp, sex, and violence,” reports Deadline.

Joe and Anthony Russo will take the seat on the director’s chair for the pilot episode. The two, who are often collectively referred to as the Russo brothers, have co-directed a number of Marvel films together including Captain America: Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. They’ll also be taking the helm for the two-part film, Avengers: Infinity War. As for experience with the silver screen, the two have a number of hit shows under their belt including NBC’s Community and FOX’s Arrested Development. It’s unclear if the Russo brothers will continue to direct The Warriors series.

The Russo brothers will join writer Frank Baldwin, a relative newcomer with only two works to his name on iMDbThe Godmother, a biopic of a former drug lord, Griselda Blanco, who reigned in New York during the 1970s and The Run, which follows the “greatest gambler in history” on the run. The former, which stars Catherine Zeta-Jones as the titular character, is in pre-production. The latter is still in the works as well.

The original movie follows seven gang members dubbed The Warriors in New York City during the late 1970s. The crew heads to The Bronx under the orders of Cyrus — a powerful and influential gang leader. Cyrus draws hundreds of gang members from all over the city to convince them to band together so they can rule New York. (Collectively, the gangs outnumber the New York Police Department.) But it all goes downhill when Cyrus is shot and the Warriors get the blame. From there, the Warriors have to make their way from the top of The Bronx to their home at the end of Brooklyn in Coney Island. The original film was directed by Walter Hill as an adaptation from Sol Yurick’s 1965 novel of the same name.

But that’s not all for film lover’s favorite gang. Rockstar Games is bringing the 2005 video game based on the film back. It was originally for the Playstation 2 but now will be available on the Playstation 4. In the video game, one or two players get to control characters in the film as they work to get the crew home. While the game remains the same, it did gain a few upgrades including “full 1080p up-rendering and enhanced features such as Trophies, Shareplay, Remote Play, Activity Feeds and Second Screen support for game manuals with PS Vita or PS App,” according to Playstation’s website. The gaming company also warns that “there may be times where the title plays differently from the PS2™ version, or where some features may not function properly.” This version also “does not support PS2™ peripherals, therefore some functionality may not be available.” Rockstar is also responsible for the popular Grand Theft Auto series (3, Vice City, and San Andreas.)

The news comes nearly a year after The Warriors celebrated its 36th anniversary. Several of the original actors, including Hill, Michael Beck (Swan), Dorsey Wright (Cleon), David Harris (Cochise), Bryan Tyler (Snow), Thomas G Waites (Fox), Terry Michos (Vermin), and David Kopland made their way to Coney Island for a screening of the film followed by a Q&A. They even re-created the scene where The Warriors takes their “last subway ride” on the Q train, captured by Rolling Stone.
