Shawn Mendes Speaks Out About Gay Rumors Amid Camila Cabello Dating Reports

Shawn Mendes is taking to Snapchat to set the record straight about rumors questioning his sexuality.

Mendes took to Snapchat to slam those who claimed he gives off a “gay vibe” in two candid videos posted on the app, where Shawn admitted that although he is not gay, “it wouldn’t make a difference” if he was.

“I don’t usually do this or bring up problems, but I was on YouTube just watching some of my interviews and I was going down the comments and noticed a lot of people were saying I gave them a ‘gay vibe,'” Shawn told fans on Snapchat this week.

“First of all, I’m not gay,” Shawn clarified in videos captured and uploaded to Twitter by social media user @griersaftaste, before going on to proudly publicly declare his support for the LGBT community.

“Second of all, it shouldn’t make a difference if I was or if I wasn’t,” Mendes said in the Snapchat video, admitting that he believes “the focus should be on the music and not my sexuality.”

Shawn also took the opportunity to blast the “one percent” of fans making assumptions about his sexuality, calling out the social media users for judging others.

“I just want you guys to know that before you judge someone on the way they speak or act, to think ‘Hey, maybe I shouldn’t be judging someone’ or ‘wait it actually doesn’t even matter?'” Shawn continued. “They can do or be or feel however they want to feel.”

Mendes then clarified that he wasn’t “frustrated” about the swirling rumors claiming he’s gay, but Shawn did admit that he was upset that some fans were still referring to homosexuality in a negative light.

“I’m not frustrated because people were saying that I was gay, I have no problem with that because it wouldn’t make a difference to me,” Shawn Mendes told fans. “I’m frustrated because, in this day and age, people have the audacity to write online that I’m gay as if it were a bad thing,” Mendes continued.

“That’s all I really have to say about that,” Mendes then concluded. “I just wish that one percent of people would grow up. I love you guys.”

Shawn’s seriously candid social media message comes amid speculation that he and Fifth Harmony star Camila Cabello were officially dating, though Mendes and Cabello have both shot down the rampant romance reports on numerous occasions.

Mendes most recently denied the Camila dating claims in an interview with Seventeen magazine, where he had nothing but praise for Cabello, despite clarifying that he and Camila are “not dating.”

Speaking out about his “I Know What You Did Last Summer” duet partner in a recent cover feature with the teen magazine last month, Mendes couldn’t help but gush over Camila, admitting that he “loves” her and thinks she’s “phenomenal.”

“I love her and she’s so talented,” Shawn told the magazine at the time. “[Camila’s] one of the sweetest girls I’ve ever met and super, super-smart… musically, she blows my mind.”

Camila also recently quashed reports claiming she and Mendes were dating, admitting to Seventeen magazine that she actually received a lot of hate from Shawn’s female fans who were jealous of their close friendship.

“Making music with your friends is the best and we’ve had so much fun working together,” Camila said of Shawn in the interview, admitting that continual reports claiming that she and Mendes are a couple “don’t bother” her.

“When it comes to Shawn the speculation doesn’t really bother me because we’re just really great friends,” Cabello said.

“At the end of the day, all that matters is that you surround yourself with people that make you happy,” Camila continued. “If people around you hate on you for that, then they’re not really people you want in your life anyway.”
