Ben Affleck’s Solo ‘Batman’ Film Is Not Coming Anytime Soon

Ben Affleck is not exactly enthused about his solo Batman movie just yet, and for good reason. If there’s anyone who knows what it feels like to get a ton of criticism after a sub-par release, it’s Affleck. Plus, the actor is probably still getting over the Sad Affleck meme that hit the Internet by storm after Batman v Superman didn’t turn out to be the best jumping off point for the DC world like Warner Bros. was initially hoping.

Recently, Warner Bros. invited many of the critics that panned the title, to London, where Affleck and co. are currently filming the Justice League movie. It’s an odd choice to have journalists come down to the set to leak information this early on in the process, but we’re guessing Warner Bros and Affleck want to get ahead of the bad buzz that’s bound to attach itself to Justice League after a lackluster outing with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

One of the tidbits that leaked from the set is that Affleck’s solo Batman script is nowhere near ready. According to Collider, the actor said he doesn’t even like the script yet, so odds are Affleck isn’t even thinking about anything related to pre-production on the solo film, and is most likely focusing on filming Justice League.

“I think [Warner Bros.] a date for it. Although, I don’t know if I would necessarily be able to make that date because I don’t have a script that’s ready yet. So my timetable is I’m not going to make a movie until there’s a script that I think is good. I’ve been on the end of the things when you make movies when you have a script that’s not good yet and it doesn’t pan out.”

Seeing as though Affleck has become a prolific director in his career, it’s not a surprise to find out that he’s not willing to go forward on a project that’s not in tip top shape yet.

“[It]’s something that would have to pass a very high bar for me. It’s not just like, ‘Yeah, that might be fun, let’s go try this out.’ ”

This sentiment has given fans hope that Affleck is not going to jump the gun on a Batman solo film just for the heck of it. Even more so, it’s clear that the actor, who is a self proclaimed comic book geek, has Batman’s best interest in mind, which means he will most likely handle the upcoming solo Batman film with care before he puts it out into the world.

Even before it was announced that Affleck would take the reigns on a solo Batman film, he didn’t seem completely convinced that fans wanted one so close to Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight take. After all, the last film, in that separate franchise, which starred Christian Bale, was released in 2012.

That said, the caped crusader is still praising DC savant Geoff Johns for his vision of the DC world, which will ultimately continue once he and Johns finish their script for Batman. Affleck told Screen Rant the following.

“Geoff’s a great guy and there’s nobody that knows more, that I know, about comic books. He’s got great taste and he’s really super smart and super nice, and Jon Berg as well has a big role.”

Surprisingly, after receiving a ton of hate when it was initially announced Affleck would play Batman in Batman v Superman, the actor has come out of the process the least hurt from scathing reviews. In fact, if there’s anything critics and fans agree on, it’s that Affleck’s Bruce Wayne and Batman were easily the best parts of a very flawed film, so with the right script in his hands, it will be very interesting to see what his solo film materializes into.
