Father’s Day Weekend Shootings In Chicago Leave 13 Dead And 42 Injured

Father’s Day weekend shootings across the Chicago, Illinois, area left 13 dead and at least another 42 injured. Authorities report that among those who were injured during the Father’s Day weekend shootings was a 3-year-old boy who was shot in the shoulder. The shootings all across the city mark yet another period between 5 p.m. Friday until early Monday morning when the crimes rates seem to skyrocket and there doesn’t appear to be much the police, and other authorities, can do right now in order to drive the numbers down.

Records that are being kept by the Chicago Tribune show the number of people who have been shot in the greater Chicago area is now over 1,780. During the most recent period, the deadliest time for those who were shot was Friday night and early Saturday morning. Five people were killed from Friday into Saturday, and another nine were severely injured. Four of the murders occurred in just one seven hour period.

Children were too often the victims during the killings and injuries that happened over the last 72 hours. Among those found dead on Friday was a 16-year-old boy who was the front seat passenger of a car that was going through an alley. The car was stopped by two men, who then opened fire into the boy’s car. It’s not yet known whether or not the driver of the car the shots were fired into survived the attack. Friday might have been a rather bloody night as far as fatalities, but there were plenty of brutal injuries during Saturday.

The Father’s Day weekend shootings claimed as many as 28 injuries on 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning through Sunday morning at 4:30 a.m. This means that during this particular period of time, someone in Chicago was being shot every 43 minutes. Two of those shot during this stretch were thought to be a murder-suicide. Police responded to a call that neighbors had heard what they thought were gunshots.

When the authorities arrived, they found a 65-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her head. There was also a 73-year-old man in the apartment who had been shot in the head. The police are not saying at this time who they believe they attacker was and who was the person who committed the suicide. Wrapping up the rather bloody weekend, five more people were killed, and at least seven others were wounded, between Sunday night and Monday morning. It is during this period of time that the aforementioned 3-year-old boy was shot through the shoulder. This particular Father’s Day weekend shooting occurred when the little boy was in a car seat with his parents when an unknown attacker fired shots into the boy’s vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle the child was in managed to get the boy to the hospital, and he was then transferred to a specific Children’s Hospital, where he is currently in critical condition. Another young person who appears to be a victim of the rather violent window was a 21-year-old reportedly shot and killed by an assault weapon witnesses believe may have been an AK-47. The victim, who was identified as Salvador Suarez was walking down the street when a van pulled up next to him; a window opened, and someone began firing the assault type weapon. Suarez is said to have been shot as he was attempting to flee.

While Chicago is getting the headlines Monday morning, it’s not the only city that saw violence over the Holiday. A family dispute in Detroit ended in violence when two men were arguing at a get-together. A third man is reported to have tried to play peacemaker, and he became yet another Father’s Day weekend shooting victim for his trouble, according to the Detroit News.
