One of the most iconic cult movies of all time is Beetlejuice, and anyone that has seen it knows that is for obvious reasons. The film is approaching its 30-year anniversary, and rumors of a sequel have been swirling for — well, for the past three decades. Things have really heated up in the past couple of years, but there has still been no real movement. Well, Winona Ryder is staying busy with other things, but has given an update on the status of Beetlejuice 2.
For the past four or five years, there have been hints and clues dropped by multiple cast members as to the status of Beetlejuice 2. The only problem is that no-one ever knew what to believe as one minute it was on and the next day, it was off. So, what’s the deal?
While speaking with Collider, Ryder finally gave a bit of an update on the possible sequel, but it’s not the most promising.
“I don’t really know what’s going on with that. Obviously, it was an iconic film. The only way it could really ever be done is with Tim [Burton] and Michael [Keaton]. I don’t know. There’s something that really resonates with all ages, with that film. It’s interesting. I think it would be great if it happened… if it was the right circumstances. Gosh, you know you’re getting older when they’re making TV shows, sequels or plays for things that you did. It’s very flattering and very humbling, indeed. I heard they were making another Little Women. Mine was the fifth one, so that’s kudos to Louisa May Alcott. It’s just very flattering.”
So, that doesn’t sound like something that is right off to the side of the front burner, as many have made it sound in recent months and years. Ryder is obviously busy, as is Keaton and Burton, but past updates have been a bit more favorable.
It was less than a year ago that Winona Ryder herself confirmed Beetlejuice 2 to be a full-on go with Keaton returning in the lead role. Until there is something fully confirmed by the director with a studio behind them, then nothing is definitely happening.
Just a month ago, Tim Burton said that the sequel was still something he was interesting in doing. He has heard the rumors of discarding Keaton in the lead role for Johnny Depp and all those things, but he said none of that was true.
According to what Winona Ryder has now had to say, it doesn’t appear as if the right circumstances have yet made themselves visible.
It’s hard to say if Beetlejuice 2 will ever happen, but it would be a complete shame if it didn’t. Winona Ryder, Tim Burton, and Michael Keaton all appear to be on board, but there is something holding them back from moving forward with it. As more time goes on, it’s going to get to a point where the cast and crew are too old to perform the roles.
