10-Year-Old Girl To Be Charged With Manslaugther In Death of Baby

Augusta, ME – State police officials say that a 10-year-old girl has been charged with manslaughter in the death of an infant from Clinton, Maine.

NBC News reports that three-month-old Brooklyn Foss-Greenaway died on July 8 while in the care of her babysitter in Fairfield, about 6 miles from Clinton.

Police say that a babysitter from Fairfield called police on July to report that Brooklyn was not breathing. Police have still yet to say if the babysitter was the 10-year-old girl or not. However, police automatically investigate deaths of children under three, reports say.

WLBZ reports that on Wednesday, the state medical examiner’s office ruled the death as a homocide.

“In this case there was some warning signs that we thought very early on,” Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCausland told WABI television. “The medical examiners have confirmed that and obviously the case now has been declared a homicide.”

“The cause of death is being withheld as the medical examiner continues to work on that aspect,” he said, according to WABI.

WLBZ also reports that the 10-year-old girl, whose name has not yet been released to the public, is now in the custody of the Maine Department of Health and Human Services.

McCausland states that the 10-year-old girl is the youngest person in Maine to be charged with manslaughter in the last 25 years. He also says that there was no arrest because the girl is already in custody of DHHS

The girl is schedule to appear in court on October 22.
