New ‘Metal Gear Solid’ Game And Movie Announced In Tokyo


If you are a fan of the stealth combat genre of video games, then today’s announcement in Tokyo will make you a very happy gamer. At a special event to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Metal Gear Solid series, Konami proclaimed to the gaming world that Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes will be the next chapter in the popular franchise.

In addition to revealing the new game, Konami gave Metal Gear lovers more great news with the announcement of a feature film to be based on the Metal Gear series. The movie will be produced by ex- Marvel CEO, Avi Arad, the man behind the ultra successful X-Men and Spiderman movies. Konami is keep the lid on information about the movie and no details about the cast, director, or release date were forthcoming. The only other tidbits released today was the participation of Columbia Pictures as the movie’s distributor.

The news about the new game was revealed during the demonstration of the next-gen Fox Gaming Engine that will be used for Metal Game Solid Ground Zeroes. As he spoke about the new game, Hideo Kojima, Vice President of Konami Digital Entertainment, said, “This announcement is a challenge from Kojima Productions to the world.”

Kojima threw down the gauntlet to game designers everywhere, and, judging by the footage viewed today, he isn’t bluffing. The Fox Engine was shown in all its glory as Snake, legendary infiltrator and saboteur from the Metal Gear series, went through his paces, dispatching enemies with ease before commandeering a vehicle and calling in his helicopter for a quick getaway.

The audience in attendance at the 25th anniversary event were shown how the Fox engine handles all the important details that go into making a great game including weather with a fantastic demonstration of rain, clothing textures, and lighting. The spectacular effects impressed those in attendance, who all agreed that the Fox Engine should bring out the best of what Xbox and PS3 has to offer for highly advanced, great looking games.

Gaming Writer Mark MacDonald, of 8-4 Ltd, was suitably impressed with the the Metal Gear demo, tweeting, “Demo of “Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes“, started w cutscene (all realtime), went into gameplay, open world, night, raining, base. AMAZING.”

Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes promises to take the Metal Gear franchise to the next level with its open world environment and lush, visually stunning atmosphere.
