Nick Jonas Releases His Most Personal Song Yet, ‘Chainsaw’
Nick Jonas is hardly the type to talk about his personal life in interviews. He’s the type of guy who keeps it under wraps instead of kissing and telling. However, that hasn’t stopped the singer from expressing himself through song. Nick has released his most personal song to date, titled “Chainsaw.”
Nick Jonas is set to release his new album, Last Year Was Complicated, which may have to do with his split with Olivia Culpo. In the video for “Chainsaw,” the singer is seen walking around his empty house as he reminisces about his relationship with his former girlfriend, who is played by the sexy Sara Sampaio. But the Jonas brother is able to move on as he takes out a chainsaw and starts ruining everything.
“Collaborating with [director] Luke Monaghan was really special as this is an incredibly personal song and the performance in the video had to represent that,” Nick said in a recent interview with Vogue. “Also, getting to work with my close friend Sara Sampaio was amazing. Not only is she gorgeous, but her acting skills were definitely on display in her performance.”
And in a new interview with Out magazine, Jonas admitted that is new album has been inspired by his former relationship.
“It became very clear what it was going to be about, after the breakup. I just dove in headfirst and wrote about all of it. I think it was the most meaningful relationship I’ve ever been in.”

Nick has been making headlines for his rumored relationship with actress Kate Hudson. But he dated Miss USA for two years before their shocking split late last year. Nick took to Twitter to also tease fans that his past relationship has been helping him get through those tough times and make new music in the process.

Is “Chainsaw” the follow-up to his last hit, “Chains”? While “Chainsaw” is angsty in nature, “Chains” is about a guy who’s so in love with someone that he wants to be tied to that person for life. In a previous interview, Jonas hinted that “Chains” is a song about a relationship that’s headed for failure.
“It’s a song that embodies the feeling of being trapped in a love that is hopeless. The story behind ‘Chains’ is basically that feeling that all people can relate to, it’s being trapped. For me specifically in this song, I connected to love and trust and for some people they have said it’s broader for them, it’s more than love, it can be about anything that entangles you in your life and doesn’t let you do what you need to do to feel free. I think this is a good fit and I fell in love with the song and I really feel like it has become a staple for the album.”
According to Lyreka, Nick lent some of his songwriting abilities to this R&B-esque song. It’s obvious that the song is about being in love with someone, but it can also be left up for interpretation. Some of Nick’s fans may correlate to the song to an addiction they have.
Interestingly enough, “Chains” was the lead single from his debut solo album. While Jonas didn’t call out names, he told E! News in 2014 that he could relate to the song even though it includes a long list of song writers, including Amar Malik, Danny Parker, and Evigan.
“I found my way to connect to the song. I found it was really true and real. For me, it embodies that feeling of being trapped in a love that is kind of doomed.”
