‘Frozen’ Fans Ask Disney To Make Elsa A Lesbian In ‘Frozen’ Sequel, ‪#‎GiveElsaAGirlfriend‬ Trends On Twitter

In a new campaign making its rounds on Twitter, Frozen fans are asking Disney to make Queen Elsa a lesbian in the upcoming sequel.

Twitter user Alexis Isabel Moncada was the first person to bring up the idea, and sent out a tweet Saturday saying, “I hope Disney makes Elsa a lesbian princess imagine how iconic that would be.” Moncada later added, “Dear @Disney, #GiveElsaAGirlfriend,” which has since been re-tweeted nearly 2,000 times.

In an article, posted to MTV, Alexis explained why she started the campaign urging Disney to make Elsa a lesbian, and why she feels it would be an iconic movement to have a Disney character fall in love with someone of the same sex.

“The entertainment industry has given us girls who have fallen in love with beasts, ogres who fall for humans, and even grown women who love bees,” Moncada wrote. “But we’ve never been able to see the purity in a queer relationship.”

“Many in the LGBT community view this movie as a metaphor for the experience of coming out and accepting who you are. Yet Elsa, the film’s protagonist, will probably end up with a male prince or king in the upcoming Frozen sequel. These thoughts soon drenched my mind and pushed me to tweet about how “iconic” it would be if Frozen‘s Elsa were cast alongside a princess instead.”

If Disney were to take the advice of Alexis and the thousands of other social media users that have gotten behind the campaign, it would mark the first time in Disney history that an LGBT princess, or queen, would be featured in one of their animated films. As of Wednesday, May 4, Disney had not responded to the campaign, but Alexis hopes they will hear about her suggestion and seriously consider giving Elsa a girlfriend in Frozen 2, which is currently in production and set to be released sometime next year.

So far, the opinions of whether or not Elsa should be a lesbian have been mixed. While some think giving Elsa a girlfriend would be a monumental move for the LGBT community, others don’t think same-sex relationships should appear in kids’ movies.

“Frozen Elsa should NOT have a girlfriend in frozen 2! We have to stop this LGBT propaganda, they’re spreading harmful messages to our kids!” one Twitter user wrote, while another added, “ I would not allow my daughters to watch the film. Not anti-gay. I don’t want Hollywood explaining sex to my kids.”

“Love is an open door,” one Twitter supporter wrote. “That door should be open to everyone, not just straight people. #GiveElsaAGirlfriend.”

“Dear @Disney #GiveElsaAGirlfriend because girls need to know everyone can be princess,” another added.

Alexis said she hopes Disney will give Elsa a girlfriend, but if they can’t, she hopes they will consider making another princess in the future a lesbian. She said, “Giving young girls the chance to understand that a princess can love another princess the same way Cinderella loved her Prince Charming is vital to their development. No one deserves to feel isolated and confused about who they are.”
