‘Princess Diaries 3’ In the Works? Director Garry Marshall Confirms Meetings With Anne Hathaway, Julie Andrews For Possible Sequel

After years, the beloved flick Princess Diaries might be getting another sequel.

According to EW, Princess Diaries director Garry Marshall confirmed that he has met with former lead casts Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews to talk about the possible sequel to the film.

“[Anne Hathaway] came to my office, she was quite pregnant — now she’s had the kid, but she comes in pregnant — she puts her computer on the table, pushes three buttons, it’s Julie Andrews on Skype in Long Island. And we have a meeting. This is how we work. So I hope they do it. This is how we work. So I hope they do it.”

The buzz for Princess Diaries 3 has been going on for months now. The speculations were also reignited after Marshall openly spoke about Anne Hathaway’s positive response on the possibility of the new sequel.

Back in March, Marshall told People that he met with Anne Hathaway when she was still pregnant. Anne reportedly agreed to do Princess Diaries 3 “in Manhattan.” That time, they had to postpone actual planning because they wanted to give Anne Hathaway more time for her baby.

Reconnecting The Cast

Garry Marshall seemed optimistic about the possibilities of the original cast reliving their roles. With the meeting with Julie Andrews, it appears that the Sound of Music actress is also willing to reprise her role as queen of Genovia.

As for the leading man, Chris Pine definitely had no opposition. Just this January, Pine was in a Q&A session in Tumblr. One user asked him if he prays “every night for a ‘Princess Diaries 3.’ ” The Star Trek actor responded saying, “Have you been reading my diary???”

Princess Diaries was this rags-to-riches story of the young Mia Thermopolis, who was found out to be connected to the royal family of Genovia. Mia tries to rediscover the royal world, which is entirely different from her American background.

The original cast includes Hector Elizondo, Heather Matarazzo, Mandy Moore, Caroline Goodall, and many more.

Because of the film’s success, they went on to creating Princess Diaries 2, which focused on Mia’s life as a princess. This time, Mia has to face the politics of the royal world of Genovia and find a fitting husband. She was informed that she cannot be queen unless she gets married in 30 days.

Nicholas Devereau, played by Chris Pine, came in the picture. Chris Pine’s character apparently had ulterior motives in courting Mia, but the two found a conflict when they fell in love with each other.

Where Do We Continue ‘Princess Diaries 3’?

Though Garry Marshall only confirmed the meetings and not the actual film, he said that people can be optimistic. It could be because Disney wants to announce the official news themselves that Marshall is backing down in confirming the Princess Diaries 3 movie.

However, it will still be a challenge to see how the production will continue the storyline from Princess Diaries 3. To stay true to its origins, they still need to show Mia as this half-bred royal who is far more carefree than the traditional princesses.

As Mia adapted on the royal world during Princess Diaries 3, it could be possible that she is already Queen by the third installation, unless they put a twist on it and make Mia a modern princess who dismisses the 30-day marriage requirement for queens.

So far, these are only speculations and none can be confirmed yet. Hopefully, they continue on with the film because everyone seems to be looking forward to Princess Diaries 3.
