Will Smith’s Awkward Dad Jokes: Will Embarrasses Jaden While Accepting MTV Award

Will Smith is a proud dad. The rapper-turned-actor shared a cute dad story when accepting the MTV Generation Award at the MTV Movie Awards earlier this month, according to Seventeen.

The I Am Legend star embarrassed his son Jaden, who was sitting in the audience at the MTV Movie Awards, by sharing one of the most adorable dad speeches ever said on TV. Will Smith received the award to commemorate his 30-year history in the business.

Will Smith came on stage and, proudly holding the MTV Generation Award in his hands, started his speech by saying that the award makes him feel old.

“When I first heard that MTV wanted to give me the Generation Award, I thought that was code for the old a** dude award.”

Will Smith continued his joke, saying the award means his “best work” is behind him. But, then, the Men In Black actor told a story that happened just recently while he was filming a movie in Brooklyn. The story goes like this: the actor stumbled across a couple of 30 to 40-year-old fans who were extremely excited to meet the actor.

And they had this 8-year-old boy, who shared the excitement of his parents, but obviously had no idea who Will Smith was. So, the 47-year-old actor got down on his knees and introduced himself as “the Karate Kid‘s dad.”

And that’s when the boy realized who was standing in front of him, screaming, “Oh, you’re Jaden’s dad!” Will Smith’s son, 17-year-old Jaden, was sitting in the audience.

Before the sweet dad speech was given by Will Smith at the MTV Movie Awards, the audience had the opportunity to witness a musical tribute in his honor by trio The Lonely Island, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The Lonely Island, which includes Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone, performed a mashup of Will Smith’s famous hits such as “Men in Black,” “Parents Just Don’t Understand,” “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It,” and “Summertime.”

When accepting the MTV Generation Award, Will Smith also had a few things to say about his 30-year-long career.

“I released my first record when I was 17. This June marks 30 years in this business for me. I really want to say I’m humbled, and I just want all of you to know I’m dedicated to being a light in this world.”

Will Smith also added that there is a lot of suffering in this world, and his music and acting career has allowed him to show his commitment “to light and to love.”

In other news, the cast of Suicide Squad, which hits theaters on August 6, looked happy at CinemaCon earlier this month, according to the Daily Mail. Among cast members present at the Las Vegas event were Will Smith, who plays Deadshot, Jared Leto, who plays The Joker, and Margot Robbie, who portrays The Joker’s canonical on-off girlfriend Harley Quinn.

Warner Bros, meanwhile, was busy presenting some of its upcoming comic book titles, including Suicide Squad, which has a mission of saving Warner Bros’ reputation after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice failed to impress movie critics. Despite bad reviews, Batman v Superman is expected to gross a total of $900 million worldwide by the end of its theatrical run.

The star-studded cast at CinemaCon included Will Smith, Leto, Robbie, Jai Courtney, Adam Beach, Joel Kinnaman, Karen Fukuhara, Jay Hernandez and others. And even though there is rivalry going on between many of the actors’ characters in Suicide Squad, the actors themselves seem to be friends with one another. Will Smith is named among the trump cards in Suicide Squad, along with Viola Davis.
