‘Captain America: Civil War’ Unstoppable In Early Reviews, Critics Agree Movie Is One Of Marvel’s Best

Captain America: Civil War is gaining momentum going into opening night. Captain America: Civil War reviews from the preview screening prove the movie works. Critics can’t yet post full reviews, but the little bit they are allowed to say is already confirming that Marvel knows what they are doing with the two new character entries to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Black Panther and Spider-Man. Early reviews also indicate that the movie works overall, despite the huge cast of superheroes and incredibly weighty storyline.

As Gizmodo reports, Civil War screened for critics, and these critics flooded Twitter with tweets of short takeaways. Fans in the general public are also going to get the chance for an early viewing on April 14. 25 screenings are going to be held at different locations across the United States, for fans that acted fast enough to get tickets. But as Collider reported, even in January after test screenings, reactions were positive and that was before the movie was actually finished. Winter Soldier set a high bar for Civil War, and it appears that Captain America movies have been the place that Marvel shows its best filmmaking.

The first on screen appearance of Black Panther has apparently worked out in favor of all the comic book fans who requested him. If the critics on Twitter can be trusted, 39-year-old Chadwick Boseman manages to capture the mystery and ferocity that epitomize Black Panther, and make him one of the most unique and powerful heroes in comics. Boseman is coming off his successful portrayals of real life African-American superheroes in his role as Jackie Robinson in 42, and James Brown in Get on Up. This time, he plays the most iconic African male superhero to appear in comics.

Spider-Man is the other major buzz maker coming out of Civil War screenings. Comic book fans knew he had to be in there, as he is critical to the plot of Civil War‘s comic book storyline. But negotiations between Marvel and Sony led to his delayed showing in promotional materials. In trailer two, he jumped out holding one of the most prized of possessions, Captain America’s shield. Comics fans will notice he isn’t wearing the Iron Spider uniform from the comics, but have been sympathetic, since they know the general public may not recognize him in that uniform. Fans are just happy to have him back at Marvel Studios, alongside the Avengers, after a five movie run at Sony.

The early critical response gives hope to comics fans who might have had certain expectations about that other dynamic superhero battle that came out last month on movie screens. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice response has been so divided as to create factions of people taking sides for and against the film. But Marvel films usually create less of those sorts of conundrums or controversies. People usually agree on the films being either good or bad, and agree on why. So there shouldn’t be much of that back and forth when Iron Man and Captain America go at it on screen.

But what happened to Hulk? He is nowhere to be found in promotional material. Last time he was on screen he seemed able to control himself less and less. He was also getting on very well with Black Widow during superhero downtime. Hopefully Captain America: Civil War won’t keep the Hulk’s fate a mystery. However, Hulk will feature prominently in Thor: Ragnarok when it comes out next year. He is also rumored to play some sort of defining role in Avengers: Infinity War. Fans from the comics will likely sense Marvel is pushing Hulk towards his Planet Hulk days, when the Hulk is in space and sporting a suit of armor, looking as cool as ever.

Captain America: Civil War gets a wide release in the United States on May 6.
