Charlize Theron Talks Sean Penn Breakup, Denies ‘Ghosting’ Him

Charlize Theron and Sean Penn are broken up and have been since late June 2015, but the actress has opened up about the relationship to the Wall Street Journal.

Sean Penn and Charlize Theron had been friends for years prior to them being in a relationship, and she insists that the breakup was a mutual decision. Theron also shot down the rumors about Penn adopting her son Jackson.

“The stories saying that Sean was going to adopt Jackson and all of that were not true. It’s not something that happens in 18 months. You can’t do that to a child. So there was an understanding that I was a single mom with a very young boy who I had to put in a situation where he understood that Mommy dates but that he does not have a father, you know what I mean?”

Apparently, there was plenty of misinformation regarding their relationship that has found its way online, including claims that Charlize “ghosted” Sean. What does “ghosted” mean? The act of “ghosting” someone just means that you’ve abruptly cut off all communication with that person and have completely disappeared, never to be heard from again. Theron denied that she had ever done that with Penn and confirms that things between herself and Sean simply weren’t working anymore. Therefore, the two decided to part ways.

“There is this need to sensationalize things,” Charlize says. “When you leave a relationship there has to be some f—ing crazy story or some crazy drama. And the f—ing ghosting thing, like literally I still don’t even know what it is.”

Along with Jackson, Charlize Theron also adopted a baby girl last August, and gave her that same name — August. Theron, 40, said that she wanted her relationship with Sean Penn, 55, to “go somewhere” before she made the decision to adopt another child. But that next phase in Theron and Penn’s relationship just never happened, and Charlize was still honest with Sean about her intention to adopt and the fact that she wanted more children.

Charlize Theron and Sean Penn first started dating back in December of 2013, just two years after she had adopted Jackson. They spent nearly a year-and-a-half together and were engaged before Theron called it off. “My publicist’s going to kill me, I’m already saying too much,” Theron said at one point during the interview. She then began to tear up. But for now, it looks as if Charlize is fine being single, raising her 4-year-old son and her daughter, who’s 1st birthday is approaching.

Charlize Theron also has a new film coming out. The Huntsman: Winter’s War is the sequel to the 2012 film Snow White and the Huntsman, which starred Kristen Stewart as the title character. This time, Snow White will no longer be the focus of the story, probably due to Stewart’s off-screen affair with the film’s director. In the sequel, Chris Hemsworth’s Huntsman is going to be heading on a mission to stop two evil sisters (Charlize as Ravenna and Emily Blunt as Freya), with his forbidden-lover, Sara, played by Jessica Chastain.

Charlize Theron, along with the rest of the film’s cast, attended The Huntsman: Winter’s War premiere in Hamburg on Tuesday. Emily Blunt, pregnant with her second child with actor John Krasinski, remembers a pretty funny moment with Theron’s son Jackson on set while filming.

“I remember Jax watched Charlize do a take, a scene where she had to be a real jerk, and he said, ‘Mumma spicy.'” Emily Blunt told WSJ. “I love that. So perfect. That’s what I called her. Mumma Spicy.”

The Huntsman: Winter’s War opens in theaters on April 22, 2016.
