Iggy Azalea Shares That She Had A ‘Psychotic Breakdown’ In 2015

Iggy Azalea has opened up about the emotional and mental turmoil she endured last year that led to what the singer claims was a “psychotic breakdown.”

The latest issue of Schön! sees the rapper fessing up about went what wrong last year when she canceled a number of performances and received heated backlash after tweeting some homophobic messages. In June, Iggy cancelled a performance at Pittsburgh Pride and shared a message of apology for the insensitive words she used in her tweets that were seen as homophobic.

“I am firm believer in equality. Unfortunately in the past as a young person, I used words I should not have. The last thing I want is for something so careless said to be interpreted as reflective of my character.”

Additionally, Azalea spent much of 2015 fighting off criticism that she was guilty of cultural appropriation. Recently in an interview with Elle Canada, Iggy addressed her sorrow at the criticism she’s drawn and the way she’s handled it. The Boom Box shared her words.

“If I could, I would Men in Black memory-erase 2015, I totally would… I think the Azealia Banks thing is what really started it all. We don’t like each other on a personal level, and that has gone on for many years — before the Black Lives Matter incident happened. So when I dismissed her, people started to think that I dismissed the whole movement, but I wasn’t trying to dismiss Black Lives Matter — I was trying to dismiss her because it’s our personal s—.”

Rapper Q-Tip was also high on the list of Iggy’s critics and Azalea was sure to address his rant, during which he stated that she needed a history lesson on black culture.

“So many people think that I don’t care about rap music and the community, but I absolutely care about it, to the core of my being. That’s why the Q-Tip incident annoyed me so much: Why do you think I need a history lesson? Because surely if I did know anything about hip-hop, I wouldn’t mix pop and rap together? Or I wouldn’t rap in an American accent if I truly understood? I just have a different perspective about rap music.”

Due to the criticism, the artist took a hiatus from social media but has recently returned. She is open about the breakdown that the difficult year caused. Page Six reports the words that the rapper told the magazine.

“I had to have a psychotic breakdown last year I felt tired and stressed out. Last year, I felt like I was definitely not in control of the media’s narrative of me. It made me feel very out of control of my own life or my ability to have my own perception of who I was. You don’t want someone else writing your narrative and making you the villain. Then, I just realized that, you know what, you can’t control it and I think I accepted that and moved on to living my life.”

Iggy says she now has a “renewed energy” and is planning a new album, tour, and a wedding in the next few months. It is, however, unknown whether the singer sought help for her turmoil.

The rapper’s soon-to-be hubby, Nick Young, and her wedding are her top priority, although Iggy worries as to how she’ll have time for her personal life and her career in months to come. The singer plans to release her second album later this year and is also nervous about touring due to the criticism she has been the target of.

“See? It’s too much stuff! I’ve got to have a wedding and go on a f–king honeymoon and … put on an arena tour, all across the whole world.”
