Sasha And Malia State Dinner Appearance — Obama’s Daughters Have Grown

Malia and Sasha Obama attended their first ever official state dinner at the White House, which honored new Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Media reports made the world realize that Obama’s daughters have grown, and it’s time to get nostalgic.

Eldest daughter Malia sported a cream-colored strapless gown with loose curls of hair over one shoulder, and Sasha appeared smart in a high-necked black dress.

According to the Daily Mail, “Malia, 17 and Sasha, 14, both donned ball gowns costing almost $20,000 each by New York-based designer Naeem Khan.”

Sasha was seated at a table next to her aunt, President Barack Obama’s sister Maya Soetoro-Ng, and Malia sat next to Grey’s Anatomy actress Sandra Oh.

The occasion honored the dashing 44-year-old Trudeau, and it was the first hosted by the White House in nearly 20 years. Justin is the son of former Canadian PM Pierre Trudeau. He was accompanied by his wife, Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau, and mother Margaret Trudeau.

Amidst discussions and display of warmth between the two countries, Trudeau made it a point to mention Obama’s daughters in his speech. Reportedly, Trudeau praised the girls for their “extraordinary strength and grace”. According to the New York Post, he “recalled how he grew up in the spotlight when his dad was prime minister and how he missed state dinners because he was too young.”

Obama also got emotional while talking about how his daughters have grown over the years.

The Huffington Post quoted Obama as saying, “They grow up too fast. Now Malia is going off to college… And I’m starting to choke up.”

Malia and Sasha have come a long way since 2009. They were about 10 and 7 when they became the first family in the White House and have grown up in the spotlight.

During the state dinner, the girls enjoyed the company of more than 170 high-profile guests, who were dressed in finery at the White House East Room. The list of star guests included Canadian-born celebrities like Michael J. Fox, Mike Myers, Ryan Reynolds, and Lorne Michaels.

The Washington Post reflected the mood of the lavish White House dinner.

“The East Room, awash in yellows and greens, reflected the springtime weather that wafted into Washington this week. Orchids, yellow roses and light-green hydrangea cascaded out of towering glass centerpieces atop tables clothed in gold patterns.”

First Lady Michelle Obama made an impression by donning a piece from one of her favorite designers, Jason Wu. She looked gorgeous in a strapless midnight blue floral gown.

Malia and Sasha are currently attending Sidwell Friends, a prestigious private school in Washington, D.C. With Obama completing his presidential term this year, his daughters remain in the spotlight. Reportedly, Obama’s daughters had limited social media access such as Facebook, as the parents are fiercely protective about their children’s privacy.

As Malia graduates from high school this summer, she is applying for reputed colleges in the United States. The family plan is to remain in Washington after Obama leaves office so that Sasha can finish high school.

Considering the attention the two teenagers received during the White House state dinner, Sasha and Malia stole the show. Undoubtedly, Obama’s daughters are blossoming into two beautiful young women. While they have spent their adolescence in the White House, it will be some time for the world to speculate if Sasha and Malia will run for office one day.
