Could Melissa McCarthy be making a return to Stars Hallow? Despite her previous statements that she wasn’t asked to return, a new photo from Gilmore Girls co-star, Yanic Truesdale, has fans thinking maybe Melissa’s coming back after all.
Yesterday, March 5, Truesdale posted a cute selfie of himself and McCarthy having dinner together just as old pals tend to do.
“Don’t read anything into it guys,” he wrote at the end of the caption. Well, despite the warning, nothing could stop fans from freaking out over the possibility of Melissa McCarthy reprising her role as Sookie on Gilmore Girls.
Could it be that our favorite beloved chef is making an epic return to the kitchen? According to TVLine, McCarthy’s TV husband, actor Jackson Douglas, is definitely making a return to the show and what would Jackson be without his beloved Sookie by his side? A mess, probably. And who knows what Lorelai will do without her best friend in town.
Also, Truesdale and McCarthy’s seemingly impromptu dinner comes at a very convenient time. As Refinery29 pointed out, the Gilmore Girls revival is being filmed right now. Additionally, Melissa McCarthy seems to be spending a lot of time in L.A. at the moment. She recently posted a selfie of herself enjoying a sunny L.A. day just a week ago.
So, could McCarthy be returning? When news of the Gilmore Girls revival first broke, fans immediately swarmed to McCarthy’s Twitter page, wondering if the star would be reprising her role as the somewhat clumsy chef, Sookie. Unfortunately for fans, Melissa McCarthy did respond, saying she wasn’t asked to return.
However, when the situation was brought up, Gilmore Girls creator and writer, Amy Sherman-Palladino, said that she’d love to have McCarthy come back but that McCarthy’s busy and she understands if it’s not possible.
“But the thing I have said [to Melissa’s team] is, ‘Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon free, I’ll write her a scene,” Sherman-Palladino told TVLine. “If she has a spare moment to run over [to the set] —even if for just a cameo—we would be totally game.”
Here’s to hoping McCarthy will “run over” to the set and pop in for at least a cameo appearance. Although we’re sure the revival will be amazing no matter what. Having Sookie back in Stars Hollow would make this revival absolute perfection.
Seriously, how would Lorelai even run the Dragonfly Inn without her best friend by her side? How will they explain McCarthy’s absence if Jackson’s still there with the kids? Who will be the perfect combination of hilarity and wisdom? With all these questions, wouldn’t it just be easier to bring McCarthy back?
Whether or not Melissa returns, this revival is going to be packed with Stars Hollow fan favorites. Currently slated to come back are all of Rory’s past boyfriends including Matt Czuchry, Milo Ventimiglia, and Jared Padalecki any of whom could be the one for Rory (or none of them; Rory is a feminist after all).
Also returning is Scott Patterson (Luke), Kieko Agena (Lane), Liza Weil (Paris), Sean Gunn (Kirk), David Sutcliffe (Christopher), Michael Winters (Taylor), Liz Torres (Miss Patty), Sally Struthers (Babette), and of course, all the Gilmore Girls. Sadly, Edward Herrman, who played Richard Gilmore, passed away in 2014, and therefore Richard will also be missing from the upcoming revival.
With almost all of the cast back, it seems only right for Melissa McCarthy to return as well. Let’s hope she does, even if it’s only for a little while.
