A day after the internet wondered if he was being held against his will, Chris Christie is being called upon to resign. The demands began pouring in following the New Jersey governor’s decision to endorse the controversial billionaire and GOP frontrunner Donald Trump.
According to USA Today, the backlash has reached the point that six prominent New Jersey newspapers have united in outrage, calling upon Christie to step down immediately.
The six newspapers including the Asbury Park Press, the Cherry Hill Courier-Post and the Morristown Daily Record [were] apparently spurred to editorial outrage by a Monday press conference in which Christie refused to answer questions about anything other than his nomination of a state Supreme Court judge.
Asked why, Christie replied, “Because I don’t want to.”
The news sources are reportedly tired of “Gov. Chris Christie’s arrogance” and “fed up with his opportunism.” Christie was also called out for “hypocrisy.”
Slate quoted a chunk of the editorial demanding Christie resign — an editorial featured in all six of the defiant papers.
Now that he is no longer running for president, what percentage of his time does he expect to spend in New Jersey on New Jersey business this year? How could he endorse someone for president who disagrees with him on virtually every important issue? [It] has been obvious for at least two years that Christie has put personal ambition ahead of the interests of New Jersey citizens.
The staff behind these unified papers believe the people of New Jersey deserve better than a Republican governor thought to not only poorly represent the best interests of his constituents, but one continuously mired in controversy himself. That Christie would endorse Trump, a man who is being linked to white supremacist groups, seems to be the final straw.
Why would Chris Christie go out of his way to endorse someone who he seems visibly unable to stand in person? It’s hard to see any genuine enthusiasm in the notorious images of Christie standing behind Trump.
There is a rumor circulating which claims the only reason Chris Christie endorsed Donald Trump was the possibility of being selected as a running mate. It’s also possible room would be made for Chris in Trump’s administration. Whatever the particular reason or reasons, there are those who feel the move by Christie represents a disingenuous nature and the governor’s poor representation of self and state.
At this point, the angry citizens of New Jersey and several of the state’s most prominent newspapers believe it would be “for the good of the state” if Chris Christie were to resign as quickly as possible. “It’s time for Christie to do his long-neglected constituents a favor and resign as governor,” demanded the editorial.
Should Chris Christie refuse to step down, it’s suggested that indignant New Jersey voters “initiate a recall effort” to get him out of office. It certainly seems as though Christie has had more to lose than gain by pushing for Trump. With so many people angry at him for reversing his political stance and position through a personalized and out-of-state endorsement, it really does seem that a spot on the Donald Trump ticket could be the only thing that would make it worth it…and that’s assuming it’s a winning ticket.
If Trump were to ultimately lose the general election, then Christie would have virtually committed political career suicide for what amounts to absolutely nothing. One has to wonder if that was the thought that triggered the bizarre and memorable expression on the governor’s face as he stood behind Trump.
Do you think New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie should resign over his endorsement of Donald Trump?
