‘Ghostbusters’ Reboot Confirms Return Of Major Iconic Character

The all-female Ghostbusters reboot came under fire following its announcement, and it still has its share of detractors, but the confirmation of several exciting cameos during the development has eased the pressure on the movie. With the tantalizing promise of a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment from our favourite veteran Ghostbusters actors, it was only a matter of time before the fans were clamouring to see their favourite, well, non-human characters.

Ghostbusters is infamous for the spooky characters of the title, and none more so than Slimer, the guzzling green ghoul who haunts both the Sedgewick Hotel and the Ghostbusters HQ during the first two movies. Despite his bad habits, Slimer also has a bit of a bromance with Peter Venkman. Synonymous with the franchise itself as he is featured in both movies, the cartoon series, and various items of merchandise and memorabilia — the iconic spectre was revealed, this week, to be joining the movie reboot. Yes, that’s right, folks. Slimer will be returning to the big screen.

Despite several major cameos hogging the headlines, with Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Annie Potts, and Ernie Hudson all confirmed, so far, Slash Film revealed that Slimer was the first official ghost to be confirmed for the Ghostbusters reboot. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, actor Michael K. Williams revealed that he has been working very closely with Slimer.

“I’m not going to lie, working with Melissa, and Kristen, and Kate, was really dope, but I got to work with Slimer, dude. Like Slimer!!! I’m in a scene with Slimer! I’m a huge Ghostbusters fan and it was a dream come true.”

Williams would also reveal a little about his character in the movie, and discussed what it was like to work with the female cast members.

“I play the FBI agent who works for the mayor. Our whole thing is, we’re going to tell the people it was a flash in the sky and ‘Run along little women with your ghosts, we got this.’ That was a dream job. They’re at the top of their game, man.

I had the pleasure of working with Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon on a show on IFC called Spoils Before Dying. So, I had a relationship with them already. Leslie Jones, you meet her once, you feel you’ve known her your whole life. She penetrates any walls or any barriers you may have, she goes right through that, right to your heart chakra. And Melissa, she’s just a gem. I have so much respect for these ladies.”

The key question on the fan’s lips — who will get slimed? The green ghost more than earned his reputation for splattering Peter Venkman (Bill Murray) in the first movie and on numerous occasions in the cartoon series. There are a few candidates for sliming in Ghostbusters as the cast continues to expand. With the inclusion of Chris Hemsworth — who steps in as Kevin, the Ghostbusters receptionist, the role-reversal equivalent of Janine — Andy Garcia, Charles Dance, Elizabeth Perkins, and Williams himself, not to mention the cameo appearances, Slimer will certainly have his pick of victims from the A-list cast.

But what other ghosts will we see? The only details revealed thus far has been Rowan, the mysterious demon who becomes the main antagonist in the movie. Whether he appears in ghost form, or shiny, red-eyed spooky face, remains to be seen, but with Slimer’s inclusion, expect more details to drop soon.

The ghosts were just as iconic in the movies as the human characters and genuinely frightening in the film’s original version. It wouldn’t be a complete reboot without seeing Stay Puft, Zuel, Vigo, or even the Library Ghost haunting our streets, museums, and our refrigerators. However, with Slimer now a member of the cast, the reboot is seriously increasing its appeal for the original fans, which can’t be bad for business.

Directed by Paul Feig and starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth, Ghostbusters opens in UK and U.S cinemas on July 15, 2016. Who you gonna call?
