Michael Douglas & Catherine Zeta-Jones Marriage: How Are The Hollywood Couple Really Doing?

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have faced a few rocky moments in their marriage and have gracefully moved past them. The pair were spotted at AARP’s 15th Annual Movies for Grownups Awards on Monday in Beverly Hills. The glamorous couple looked happy and more in love than ever while on the red carpet.

Douglas took a few moments to open up about what it takes to maintain both his health and his marriage to Zeta-Jones, People reports.

The 71-year-old star says it’s about taking things “moment to moment.”

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones split temporarily in 2013. They encountered some difficult times in their marriage and needed a chance to iron things out. Fortunately, they worked through their differences and managed to stay together after Michael’s bout with throat cancer and Catherine’s battle with bipolar disorder. Douglas is now cancer-free after five years.

Douglas noted in his interview that it’s easy to take your loved one for granted and put more effort with strangers to make things work.

“Catherine reminds me, I like to say sometimes, we all make more efforts to strangers than we do to the people closest to us,” Douglas admitted.

Zeta-Jones, 46, is 25 years younger than her husband. She looked amazing in an Escada jumpsuit at the AARP awards ceremony. Douglas was honored with a career achievement award at the event.

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones reportedly sat next to Bette Midler at their table. Douglas and Zeta-Jones were observed whispering intimately to each other throughout the night.

Michael credits his wife for his health.

“I think love, without getting too corny, nourishing each other, working at relationships, good sustenance, good food, good kids, all kind of a combination,” he said.

The movie star added that his health has become a priority in recent years. He watches what he eats and drinks — and works out. On top of everything else, Michael says the drastic age difference between himself and Catherine helps to keep him young! In fact, his wife told reporters that “he’s a good commercial for AARP because he’s fit in mind, body, and soul. And I think that’s longevity, right there.”

Douglas said that his love for Zeta-Jones has also played a role in his health.

“And marry somebody quite younger than you are, and try to keep up with them,” he said with a laugh.

Douglas made a speech that echoed his sentiment when he declared that “the AARP does such great work to support the elderly, as does my wife Catherine, from the moment she married me! Darling I thank you for all your support, and the family.”

Catherine Zeta-Jones is the cover story for Good Housekeeping in its February, 2016, issue. In her interview, she tells the magazine that she knows the importance of keeping the flame burning hot in a marriage.

“Fifteen years is a long time,” Zeta-Jones said. “You’ve got to keep the home fires burning! It’s a long road and I think people today are so quick to throw in the towel on marriage. You have to give it your best shot and not give up when the first problem arises, because that won’t be the last problem. There will be many more down the road.”

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones have dealt well with the problems thrown their way before the public. Not many could handle that in a marriage — even without the glare of cameras.
