Kevin Smith Returns To Full-Time Movie Making With ‘Yoga Hosers’ [Video]

Kevin Smith is back to movies full time.

Between 2011 and 2014, Kevin Smith took a break from the big theater movie scene.

In 2011, Kevin Smith put out Red State independently and made it a point to advertise it himself without a budget. He used word of mouth and the internet as his only marketing sources. Smith showed the horror film to select audiences for a higher price and each show was followed by a Q&A with him and the cast.

That isn’t what people remember about what happened, though.

What preceded his tour was a speech Kevin Smith gave at a movie festival.

Kevin showed Red State at Sundance and told people he would be auctioning it off to a distributor after the showing. During his speech, Smith proceeded to outline how much money a distributor would have to spend in order to get the film out there. He made it clear that he believed he could do it for less and then bought his own movie.

Although Kevin Smith meant only to point out the flaws of Hollywood marketing and spending, his speech was seen as an implosion of sorts, and it isolated him from a lot of distribution and production companies.

Whether or not that was what caused Kevin Smith to take his break from movies is unknown, but he returned in 2014 with the quirky, strange, comedy-horror: Tusk.

Tusk was directed/written by Kevin Smith and starred Michael Parks and Justin Long. It was not particularly well received. Currently on Rotten Tomatoes it’s rated 40 percent rotten by critics and 36 percent rotten by audience. It wasn’t exactly viewed as a triumphant return to movies for Smith.

What it was, however, an open door that began to re-inspire him.

According to an interview between Indie Wire and Kevin Smith, Tusk brought him back to the possibility of making even more movies. A scene in the horror film between Harley Quinn Smith and Lily-Rose Melody Depp made Kevin think of his first film, Clerks. In the interview he said that his wife made him realize it was a kind of “girls clerks.”

After that realization, Kevin Smith went on to expand the Tusk world into three movies, a trilogy. The second of the trilogy, Yoga Hosers, will be releasing very soon.

Yoga Hosers stars Kevin Smith’s daughter, Harley, and Johnny Depp’s daughter, Lily. Together, in the film, they will be playing clerks that are forced to team up with a hunter of some kind to battle evil.

Aside from Yoga Hosers, Kevin Smith is writing five other films, including three that are meant to come out in 2016.

Fans of Smith will be looking forward to Clerks III and MallBrats (aka Mallrats 2), but there’s very little known about either film just yet. At most, people are aware that there will be some familiar faces reprising various roles from previous films.

For Clerks III, Kevin Smith fans will be greeted with Randal (Jeff Anderson) and Becky (Rosario Dawson). In MallBrats, fans will get reacquainted with Brodie (Jason Lee) and T.S. (Jeremy London).

As the third installment of the Tusk trilogy, Smith has been working on Moose Jaws. It will bring back Johnny Depp and Haley Joel Osment.

Outside of sequels, Kevin Smith is set to write Holidays (a horror film), and Helena Handbag (an animated comedy).

More than once Kevin has told Hollywood and his fans that he intended to stop creating movies. If 2016 is any indication, however, it looks as if Smith is no longer thinking along those lines. In fact, it seems as if the move into distributing his own films and then getting Tusk released has rejuvenated Kevin Smith and brought him back to the director he always wanted to be.
