Philip Seymour Hoffman Joins ‘Hunger Games’ Cast

Philip Seymor Hoffman has joined the cast of The Hunger Games. The Oscar-winning actor will play Plutarch Heavensbee in the second film, Catching Fire.

It’s been rumored for a while that Hoffman would join The Hunger Games sequel but Lionsgate made it official today with a post on the movie’s Facebook page.

Lionsgate writes:

“Lionsgate and the filmmakers of THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE are pleased to announce that Philip Seymour Hoffman has been cast in the role of Plutarch Heavensbee, Head Gamemaker for The Hunger Games, in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel Catching Fire.”

The studio describes the character, saying:

“Plutarch is appointed Head Gamemaker for The Hunger Games following Seneca Crane.”

Hoffman is the first new major addition to the Hunger Games cast. The Academy Award-winning actor will join Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, and Stanley Tucci. Director Gary Ross will not be returning to the franchise. He has been replaced by Francis Lawrence.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Lawrence expects to start shooting later this year. The movie is scheduled to be released next November.

In addition to announcing Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s involvement in the new movie, Lionsgate also released the first official synopsis of Catching Fire.

Lionsgate writes:

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) — a competition that could change Panem forever.”
