Xbox 8 Domains Obtained By Microsoft As Rumors Start To Circulate

Will the next generation of Xbox be named Xbox 8? Probably not, but then again it might be. The rumor mill started churning today after news broke that Microsoft had obtained two domains related to the name Xbox 8.

According to CNN, Xbox obtained the rights to Xbox8.0rg and Xbox8.us from a cybersquater. The National Arbitration Forum handed the two Xbox 8 domains, as well as xboxcompanion.com, xboxlivetv.com, xboxphone.com, and xboxtablet.com, over to Microsoft today.

The new domain could mean that Microsoft is set to release a new gaming system called Xbox 8. But it could also mean an infinite amount of other things. In fact, one user points out that the 8 may represent the infinity symbol and Microsoft may be naming its new system Xbox Infinity.

The new domain name could also point to something that involve Windows 8 or to the fact that next year is the 8th anniversary of Xbox. MSNBC speculates that Microsoft may just be planning for the future and is making sure that when the company releases the 8th version of Xbox it will own the domain.

Of course, it could also mean nothing.

A company spokesperson told Kotaku:

“Microsoft often acquires various domain names as part of its ongoing business strategy, but beyond that we have no comment.”

This is the second time in the last month that gamers have gotten excited about an Xbox rumor. A leaked internal document detailing the new Xbox 720 had people talking about a new gaming system that uses augmented glasses.

Do you think Microsoft’s new system will be called Xbox Infinity?
