Ronda Rousey Spotted in Public for First Time Since UFC 193 Loss

Ronda Rousey has made a rare public appearance since her loss to Holly Holm on November 15. The previously undefeated women’s bantamweight mixed martial artist was spotted the day after Thanksgiving walking her pit bull with boyfriend and fellow MMA fighter Travis Browne according to E Online.

Rousey suffered a massive kick to the head that landed her in the hospital after her fight with Holm. The fighter is currently on a 60-day medical suspension due to the damage sustained during the fight that would end Rousey’s undefeated reign in the octogon. If there is any sign of brain damage from Rousey’s CT scans she will be sidelined for at least six months.

Holm has said she would accept a rematch between herself and Rousey once the fighter has been cleared medically to return to full contact in the octagon. Rousey has not commented on the idea of fighting Holm again. Holm has said she would train twice as hard in order to be prepared for a rematch.

While Rousey posted pictures on social media of her and family seeming to enjoy their holiday, there is drama in the Rousey household. Rousey’s mother has claimed that her coach, Edmond Tarverdyan, is horrible at his job and is demeaning to women. In fact she commented that if it wasn’t against the law she would run him over with a car. Rousey’s mother feels that Ronda is doing herself a disservice by sticking to Tarverdyan and allowing him to promote Glendale Fighting Club through her according to MMA Fighting. Whether this loss will also cause Rousey to reconsider her coaching staff is yet to be seen.

Tarverdyan tends to stick with boxing during Rousey’s training sessions, and Georgi Karakhanyan, who formerly trained at the Glendale Fighting Club, believes that is what cost her the win at UFC 193. Karakhanyan thinks Rousey should listen to her mother and find a coach that will spend more time in live sparring than Tarverdyan offers in order to put Rousey back on the top of women’s MMA. “She needs more sparring with maybe MMA gloves instead of boxing gloves,” said Karakhanyan.

Rousey has many upcoming projects that will keep her busy even if she can’t fight in the near future. The superstar has two movies in the works including a remake of the 1989 cult classic Road House. In Road House she will portray the lead role made famous by Patrick Swayze. She is also set to begin filming Mile 22, where she portrays a CIA agent, sometime in 2016. Mile 22 was set to begin filming in May but has been pushed back. According to the Washington Post, Rousey will likely not fight again until UFC 200 which is set to take place in Las Vegas in June 2016. Whether the loss to Holm changes that or not is yet to be seen.

If Dana White, the CEO of the UFC, has his way a Rousey vs Holm rematch will happen sooner rather than later. White was quoted as saying “I mean, obviously we don’t make fights the night of the fight, but the rematch makes a lot of sense,” he said. “The rematch is what people would want to see. It changes a lot of things now. The Cyborg fight… some other stuff we were working on,” after UFC 193 according to MMA Mania.

White is most likely correct about fans wanting to see Rousey in a rematch with Holm but most are looking forward to a Rousey win this time. Rousey will need to spend more time training and focussing on her weaknesses in the octagon to please her fans. Maybe spending some more time out of the spotlight will do the bantamweight fighter some good.
